And if he pulls his groin and you're stuck with Hildeby and Murray for 3 weeks? There's another b2b in 12 days with Tampa and Columbus.
For the record a 6'6 beast of a man puts more pressure, demand and stress on the groin muscles than a 5'7 pipsqueak.
I don't recall any history of Stolarz pulling his groin - and he has little history to work with. He's never made back-to-back starts in the NHL, and he's 30 years old. He has appeared in back-to-back games, having relieved on game 1 of a double-header, and then started in the second game. He's won once, lost twice - and both losses he didn't fare well. - Monkeypunk
IMO you deal with problems when they come not when you think about the possibility of them coming. Also, if you don't train/prepare for something chances for injury are far worse. The hockey season is a grind. The playoffs are a grind. Time to toughen up, not coddle.
A guy that's 6'6" doesn't have the same size/strength groin as a guy 5'7" so I think your analogy is bunk. It's all relative. Stolarz can survive a couple B2Bs over a season, it's should be in his job description at certain times.
Ya sure, we've got 15 goalies but the Leafs need one good one. their "go to" guy and they need that one good one to win games. Every night the team should pick the one most capable of winning and put them in the net, whomever that is and regardless of superstition and speculation.
If Hildeby is the guy then it is what it is, but it shouldn't be because Stolarz played one (frank)ing game yesterday.
The goal tonight and every night is to WIN ...and beat Keefe.
Edit: they have 15 goalies IN CASE of injury, not to PREVENT maybe getting an injury. Why not hold out Matthews until the middle of the season so he doesn't pull his groin, Marner is fine he's a pip squeak??? |

Yes, it's a grind. That's the main reason not to make it harder than it needs to be.

Stolarz has (barely) been a back-up as a professional in the NHL. He's usually the guy playing 2nd of the back-to-back. Not playing two games back-to-back. That's not what they signed him for. They signed him to save Woll. Not to be pounded into the ground in place of Woll.

The tandem strategy being deployed by a lot of teams is specifically to avoid overworking your best goalie. The Leafs current best goalie is already injured. Why put the 2nd best goalie in a situation to join him on the IR?
Having a "go to" only matters for the playoffs. Seeing as this is October, we're not there yet.
If Hildeby is the guy then it is what it is, but it shouldn't be because Stolarz played one (frank)ing game yesterday.
You, nor anybody else, knows if Hildeby is "the guy" yet because he hasn't been given an opportunity in a real NHL game. Maybe this is his chance to show he can be the guy.
The goal tonight and every night is to WIN ...and beat Keefe.
(frank) Keefe. If they want to beat Keefe, beat him when it matters and go further in the playoffs.
Edit: they have 15 goalies IN CASE of injury, not to PREVENT maybe getting an injury. Why not hold out Matthews until the middle of the season so he doesn't pull his groin, Marner is fine he's a pip squeak???
Because Matthews plays 20 minutes a night. Goalies play 60. They also have a lot more explosive movements in unpredictable situations. You can't rest a player the same way you rest a goalie. But NBA players are starting to do a lot more "load management" for that reason. Protecting star / important players is becoming more and more utilized strategy to get the most out of your team when the games matter in May, not in October. |

Wise would have been to never sign him in the first place. |

Your hope that Hildeby gets the start is extremely hopeful
https://thehockeynews.com...lineup-against-the-devils
I get your logic but it’s looking like Berube sees it differently. - Dozzer
I was hopeful that Woll wouldn't be a band-aid this year. But I expected it.
I now hope Stolarz doesn't get overworked this year. But I expect it.
And when bad things happen, I won't be surprised.

Woll doesn’t bother me this year, but the next 3 after this when he’s making $3.667 million a year? Yikes. Here’s hoping they figure out how to treat him to develop his durability. |

Which is precisely why I was critical of that contract being given to him BEFORE he could prove he could play a full season as a starter without falling apart.
I suppose, if he keeps getting hurt, he'll just become the 3 million dollar back-up. But the Leafs will be without a legit starting goalie while they're trying to win a Cup. And that, rarely, if ever, works out well. |

If he's going to get anything from Wolverine, he'd be better off with the healing factor, no? |

For the record, I don't disagree with what you and Monkey are saying. I just disagree that a well-conditioned athlete can't play B2B games once in a while.
But your logic on Hildeby could be used for Storlarz playing more games and the occasional B2B: how do you know he can or can't do it until he does or doesn't do it??? |
