If that's the deal, I have no idea why it wasn't done months ago. We all saw that number coming. |

My guess is the Rangers would sign up for that today (as would I) and Laf is willing to bet on himself for potentially more. |

$8.5M would be the cap% equivalent of Jack Hughes' deal which was 9.7% of the cap when he was signed. I'm fine with $8.5 or anything below, just get it done ASAP so we have certainty for the Shesty deal. |

If Laf starts rolling and the Drury drags his feet a bit, that price tag will be inching up every toe drag goal.
Old man reflection: Remember when 8mill was reserved only for the top end player. Back in 1998 when Lindros was the top paid player.
Fun fact to support Igor getting paid. In 1998, 4 goalies were in the top 20 of salaries. Currently, on 2 goalies. One being Carey Price who isn't even playing. |

I'm on Team Pay Igor but it's tough to compare today to pre-cap NHL |

Yeah but back then there was only a number 1 goalie who played 60-70 games and a back up that played 10 to 20.
Now a days you have the 1a and 1b goalie because todays goalies only play 50 maybe 55 games so you need a really good 1b player. |

Playing fun adjusted inflation numbers on salary. If Igor wants to be paid 11.7 Million a year. In 1998 adjusted for backwards inflation, he would be making 6 million a year.
So based on JUST CPI adjusted inflation salary. He is not off base.
Responding to Brukie's comment as well, absolutely other factors come into play when paying someone commensurate to current market conditions. I am just playing with fun stats and numbers. |

I'd be more curious looking at the numbers from goalies in 2006 in the first year under the cap. And seeing how the top goalie contracts then compare to today, but using the increase in salary cap rather than CPI as the adjustment.
Not giving you homework but if you're so inclined... |

I ended up doing it myself.
In 2005-2006 the salary cap was $39M. 2025-2026 (start of Igors new contract) is supposed to be $92.5M.
If Igor signs for $12M, based on the increase in the cap over the years that would be equivalent to a salary of $5.1M in 05/06.
Top 3 goalie salaries in 05/06:
Khabibulin: $6.75M
Brodeur: $5.24M
Kolzig: $4.94M
As other have pointed out there are differences in workloads for goalies and how teams are built in general but pretty interesting.

the only problem with debating whether or not Igor should get 12 million a year is what evidence do we have that he would even accept that number?
maybe he wants to be highest paid player in NHL |

Get the regular season games played argument, but he’s going to play 100% of playoff games and that’s all that matters to me now. Cup of bust the next handful of years.
$12M seems like a ton, but gotta get it done. Doesn’t seem like it would have major implications to the roster construction as long as the cap goes up as expected. |

Well, obviously EVERYTHING we discuss is conjecture. But, he did state that he wants to be the highest paid on the team and didn't mention the league at large. I'd say that's enough to base a useless, arbitrary debate on! |

Interesting. Nice job.
And those 3 goalies were the only goalies in the top 25 in salaries that year. Last year there were no goalies in the top 25 salaries. It appears that Igor is trying to reset the market for goalies to be back in the mix of top salaries. |

yeah, I hear ya
I just really think it's kind of like a Juan Soto situation with Igor
he wants to see what he can get as a UFA next summer
doesn't mean he won't sign long term with the Rangers next summer, and maybe he'd still give the Rangers a final chance to match some other teams offer, but I just get the feeling he's going UFA
and thats fine, if he's betting on himself, 2024-25 should be a great season

If the money is his main motivator here, he's almost certainly going to remain with the Rangers. They can give him the 8th year and another team would have to pay him significantly more to get to the same total contract value. If he took $12x8 in NY that's $96M total. A team that could only give him 7 years would have to pay about $13.7M to get to the same number. That would be a real tough contract for most teams to handle. |

If he gets to Free Agency on July 1st 2025 can the Rangers still offer him the 8th year? |

That would suck to lose Igor for nothing
He could bring a haul in a trade to help extend the window
If Drury realizes he can’t afford him maybe it would be smart to move him at the deadline
It’s a tough predicament cause they want to win a cup this year |
