Well, they do have a chance - they are contenders. And there won't be many favorites that will part with the assets Leafs would want.
Whether or not they want to re-sign him is irrelevant in Marner's decision to (not) waive his NMC.
He finishes out the season with Leafs, then re-signs a deal both can live with, or goes to FA and gets a big contract.
It's win-win for Marner to finish the year as a Leaf.
