Hakanpaa and Dewar eligible to be back Saturday and sounds like they're both full out at practice.
If so ...need to clear 2 roster spots and about 1.4M in cap space.
Time for a move or two. - The Law
Who hasn't made the cut? There are 23 players on the roster.
The obvious first move is to demote Myers to the Marlies.
Then you have to select which forward to waive/trade: Robertson, Holmberg or Reaves.
Ignoring skill and looking strictly at role - Dewar is better than Holmberg at a checking line role and I'd be inclined to think that's where they go. If I were being practical, it would probably be Reaves.
That said those are waiver moves. They could "just" trade Liljegren and Robertson who should have trade value and then not even worry about cap space when Jarnkrok is ready - then it becomes a Myers goes down and Jarnkrok comes in and you can accrue cap space for the deadline.

Huh?
I think I missed your point here, I was curious about 2 things (it's entirely possible I was unclear).
1. How many times after a Captain hands over his C to another player does he stick around with the team for more than to finish out that year? (Brown was a good example).
2. How many times does #1 happen and that team wins a cup with that former captain still on the team.
So Dustin Brown was an example of #1 (I think he stuck around and stayed in LA for what 4 or so more years until he retired no?) But he is definitely not an example of #2.
I wasn't trying to say there was any coloration really just one of those things that I was wondering about since the Leafs just swapped out the "C" is all. - Cush29
I think the percentages for 1 may be low, which correlates to the 2nd being even lower. But I would also say that #2', not winning a cup with a former captain isnt because the former captain is on the team.
Now, i gotta do a 1 and a 2 |

Tre almost traded for Tanev and Zadorov this time last year.
I wonder if the Ducks, who are weak on the RS and probably understand Vatrano is going to be(already is) in a big statistical down year, if there is a deal here early on with Leafs needing to get some cap and roster space.
Liljegren 2.6M bonus paid July 1st, 1M salary this year, 2.6M next
Robertson
for
Vatrano 50% retained and a pick |

Myers sure, tre will be cranky if he is taken but is what is.
Who else? Anyone else you send down you are losing, and losing value. Unless they do Reaves which I do not think tre does.
If they are healthy in a few weeks you need to send another down when Jarnkrok is ready. |

Ya agreed - Holmberg and Myers is enough and the easiest. Maybe Reaves agrees to a short LTIR stint with that bad knee (if a demotion was on the table).
A trade is probably their best bet but they may not like what they're being offered.
We'll find out soon. |

Krok hasn't skated at all and last word was he wasn't expected on skates (TBD). If the sports hernia rumour is real then he could be a playoff type addition for us. |

He's not been worth it at 11 million for the majority of his contract. He's not worth 9 or 7. He might not even be worth it at 5 million.
He does not play a defensive role well. He's on the wrong side of 35. His offensive game is likely to decline to the point where he won't be useful at either end of the rink.
He's not even a noted playoff performer like a Joe Pavelski so it's not like you can afford to have him on a bad contract and then pop off in the playoffs either.
He was given 7 years, at his peak prime, to get the job done. He didn't.
The Leafs are already going to have a bunch of old guys on the blueline. They don't need to go the route of the Pat Quinn days of Toronto Maple Retirement program. |

I’m pretty sure JT wants to retire as a Leaf and won’t hurt the likelihood of that happening by playing hardball on his next contract. |

Legalize performance enhancing drugs. Pump JT full of steroids, testosterone, HGH, and Adderall. That's gotta give him another couple of good years. |

I would agree he wants to retire here, not sure he will be cheap enough or good enough.
He had a good night last night thanks to Patches and Willy. I would keep that line together for now. |

He only wants to retire a Leaf if he gets what he wants financially too. That's the part of the sentence he never mentions because it wouldn't be as powerful a PR line.
Notice how the last time he "wanted to be a Leaf" he became the 2nd highest paid player in the NHL?
If he ONLY wants to be a Leaf, then we can talk and he'll be happy with 800K.
But that's not happening, is it? |

Offer him $2-3m x 2 years. If he does well after 2 years and wants to continue playing, then extend one more year at $1m.
If he turns it down, tell him good luck and offer him a front office job once he finishes up on some other team desperate to overpay.
The Lightning and Stamkos saga was painful, but overpaying a fading star for nostalgic reasons is rarely the smart move. |

Especially when that "star" player didn't win jack poop and was actually a hinderance to success instead of an integral part of it. |
