So really dumb question, but….

We took the kids to the very very west coast a few years ago. Summer.

Got the kids settled in our room, hit the hotel bar in Ucluelet.

Bartender told us about “stormchasers” they come to the region in November-December to “feel” the violent storms off the Pacific. Stand out in the rain and wind, getting wrecked.

And damn, I’m curious.

Is this as cool as it sounds?

Oh that would be cool. I hope Matthews comes back ready to rock and shoots the puck into the net like a madman.

In tonight's game they asked the panel if Matthews could even hit 50 if he came back on Wednesday knowing that he'd need 45 goals in 61 games to do so.

If you look at his 61 game stretches in 2023-24, there was never a 61 game stretch where he scored fewer than 48 goals - his peak was 55.

If you look at 61 game stretches in 2021-22, there was never a 61 game stretch where he scored fewer than 49 goals - his peak was 57.

In 2022-23 where he was fighting the wrist injury and only scored 40 goals, his low over 61 games was 31 and his high was 36.

The odds are in his favour.

Hopefully his return doesn't mess up the team mojo. Lotta bodies coming back over the next bit, and the team has been rolling.

Fair. Given that they are saying it's a UBI, it could be his wrist again - but I'm also taking what they say at some face value and the lack of seriousness around it has to carry some weight.

But I mean an upper body can be ribs, break, strain, elbow, wrist, finger, shoulder, back, pecs, head, neck . . .moustache - and seeing some secret German doctor is very clandestine. I mean while Frankenstein was Swiss, that's a German name. And Matthews did play in Switzerland - so I think it's possible he just needed new human parts sewn on.

How's this for a recency bias question - but a fair question that's less silly than the above paragraph: In 2022-23 when he fought with his wrist injury much of the season, he was shanking the puck a lot, wasn't he? Sort of like he is now? I ask because I literally don't remember much about his shots in 2022-23 - but I do recall that in both that year and this year he was deferring on shots he'd normally take a few more times.

Whats his injury?
That will dictate whether the odds are in his favour or not.

Edit: Nevermind, I see this was already pointed out

And what about the new coach’s game? Doesn’t seem quite as open offensively. May not make a difference to Matthews, just asking an honest question.

Yup, short example so far, but its definitely not as open and loose as it was in previous years. I could see personal stats being impacted for gain in other areas of team play.

Yeah for instance Matthews and the number of blocked shots will continue to look great.

I’m not too worried, watching Marner/Nylander as of late makes me see that Berube seems more focused on the transition but once they’re in the offensive zone it’s a bit more open, so long as they can back check fast when needed. And let’s face it, all a healthy Matthews needs are shots, they’ll go in regularly.

Yeah man. Goaltending, D, playing hard. The win against Vegas was outstanding. And this is while being shredded by forward injuries.

They say ubi but he didn’t skate for awhile. If it was his wrist you think he would still be skating.

Yeah, and I think the fanbase was pretty much unanimous in wanting the D upgraded.

Berube has changed how we play though. That's still a work in progress, but the results are showing and when the play style supports it, you can make your goaltending look better than it is, not to take away from Stolarz/Woll, but they're not exactly a proven veteran tandem or anything.
