You’re making it more complicated than it is. You don’t even know the definition of a reverse hit, as indicated by the video you posted.
If a player has control of the puck and someone tries to hit him he’s free to protect himself and use his weight to reverse hit said player. It’s not that complicated, and it’s not a penalty, which is why it’s not called a penalty. (unless you leave your feet) - Pacificgem
You may need to break out the Crayolas and diagram it out. Just don't eat them all beforehand. |

Not only do you not understand the game of hockey, you don't understand the rules either. It was simply called a penalty because he (Pettersson) left his feet. You can't do that, even if you're stationary. You cannot jump into a player whether you're taking a stride or standing still. Crouching down, using your weight and leverage, is allowed, however.
Ya you can’t just do whatever you want cause you have possession
Rule 42.1 of the NHL Rulebook states that a "minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates, jumps into or charges an opponent in any manner." - Pacificgem

It’s always at the discretion of the ref but you’ll typically get 2 minutes, or more, if you leave your feet or if your initial point of contact is the head. Other than that a reverse hit is not a penalty under current NHL rules. Providing you have control of the puck. It happens in almost every game. |

Bert got a few penalties doing his one handed magic too, they didn’t know how to handle his using his other hand to clear the way |

I was considering bringing up a Bert incident with officiating actually. Glad you did.
I remember a case when he was steaming down the wing with the puck and he blew up a player trying to squeeze him out along the boards. Instead of squeezing by, Bert just went through center of mass... didnt lose the puck and left the player behind on his ass. Bert got a charging call even though his path was clear until the millisecond before the player stepped in front of him. He was carrying the puck at full speed. What is he supposed to do when a player tries to cut him off? Go around him? That's not how the game is played. If he actually looked for a player to run down while with the puck I would understand but he was just trying to get down the ice with the puck.
No one was fooled what that was about. Crooked league leaning on him. |

He was a tough guy to call, but I agree a lot of questionable calls I seem to recall. |

I remember the memo that went out to the refs over the push off he would do. It was public and they only used it against him. The first time was bizzarro. He's in front of the goalie and the ref was watching him like a hawk while he took one crosscheck after another... the ref was holding the whistle half way to his mouth waiting in anticipation. After 7 or 8 crosschecks, Bert finally pushes the guy away and immediately the whistle went for the crosscheck. Every single crosscheck he took was worse.
Crooked league. |

No kidding. Same with T.O. and Oilers fans I feel.
I had people point out to me that the Leaf's get more penalties on most nights. Something they couldn't deny is when you watch Leaf's games or highlights... how (frank)ing often they get the very late PP in a game when they are behind by a goal. Ridiculous made up bullpoop calls. I never seen a team in my life tie up games in the last 2min on the PP often as them... or hold onto the 1 goal lead for that matter on the game ending PP.
Oilers... well... just look at the Petey penalty we're are discussing and how it took us off the PP. Oilers benefit from crazy calls or non calls so much I want to puke. Both refs will watch McDavid spear someone in the nuts and no call. (frank) off NHL. We can see you. - boonerbuck
Don't see the Leafs/Oilers refs favors you claim (no CDN team really under Bettman lol) but I will say that Saturday Ottawa Van game was one of the worst reffed games of the year. The Hughes call was so bogus and they literally put Ottawa back in the game when the Nucks were in control 4-1. Just sad to see is all the inconsistency just getting worse and worse while the league gets softer and softer.
