not surprisiing to me at all. Sens fans were all excited about Giroux and Debrincat. Giroux is getting up there in age, and Debrincat had great totals.... playing with Pat Kane. They were both question marks. and those two are not enough to take a talentless bottom feeder to the playoffs.

They seriously overrate their young players. Guys like Batherson, Pinto, Norris.... they're not as good as Sens fans like to think. They're not the core of a good team. Even Tkachuk. He's a complimentary player, sort of Kessel was (but nowhere near as good as Kessel).

I'm not surprised one bit they're still a bottom dweller. the only thing changed is that they're a bottom dweller with big contracts to pay. Giroux signed to 37 at 6.5 mil. oooofffff

I saw some comments from Sens fans about a week ago, along the lines of "we're only 9 points out of a playoff spot, with 60 games left" - I recall going through this in the dark years of the Leafs. it brings back memories.

It's really interesting when you look at it from a mathematical perspective. It takes roughly 95 points to be somewhat sure you're going to make the playoffs (most years that makes it in both conferences, but not all). it's a good benchmark to aim for if you want to be a playoff team.

Even this early, and only 9 points out of a spot, the Sens need rougly 78 points in their remaining 61 games. That equates to about a .639 points %. A little higher actually.

To put that in perspective, that's a top 10 NHL team. They have to be transition from a bottom 5 team, to a top 10 NHL team, for the entire remainder of the season, starting RIGHT NOW, just to scrape into the playoffs.

I think we're seeing a 6th straight season out of the playoffs for them. It's worth noting, just one more and that matches the 7 straight the Leafs managed in their worst stretch in their 100 year history.

Sens headed towards another lottery pick. Maybe its the Sabres/Oilers/NJ rebuild model. Suck for at least 10 years to get enough top picks to be competetive. We may never know, they will probably be moved before they are a playoff team.

Sabres and Oilers are not really all that competitive.

But yeah, it looks like Ottawa is going down the path of being crap for a long time.

Tanking for draft picks isn't all that great when you waste them on players like Jake Sanderson when there are players like Jamie Drysdale available.

I'm very excited to see this team coming together, they may not win much, but they truly are getting more difficult to play against. It's not very hard for other teams to play against and leave with 2 points. It's also not very hard for other teams players to score goals. we give up tonnes of shots you know. but it's hard for them to get those shots!!! I guess it's not very hard for other teams goalies to stop our shots either. but somehow, the ottawa senators are a hard team to play against. Maybe because, we're.... a team? Rebuild is over. This team HAS ARRIVED!!!

Given the contracts they've handed out to mediocre players, it's not going to be easy to add to that subpar roster. It's going to have to come from the draft, I guess. But even if that works out, that's what, a 3 or 4 year road, minimum?

In the entire history of the Leafs, that 7 year playoff drought was the worst stretch in team history. Odds are very high the Senators fare worse than that, in this current stretch. Im thinking 10 years is likely at this point.

For a team that loses money and is virtually a cap team, they are not very good. Questionable goaltending and that contract to Joshua Norris is a head scratcher.

This is an important point. I have always thought the Toronto media had way too much influence in the Leaf decision making. The media creates a theme, they pump the theme and everyone comes to believe in the theme because nobody wants to break the story line.
