Reality - the sens were done by xmas. it would require approx 46 points in their last 33 games to make the playoffs (only 2 teams currently have a better pts than that in the entire NHL)

it was always going to be tough for them to make the playoffs, I had this conversation with my friends who are Sens fans, they needed to make up a lot of points, and in a tough division. who were they going to push out? TB, Toronto, Bos and Florida were all going to be in the discussion. The sens were just not in that league yet.

could sneak in in a wildcard spot, but that was also a tough task. they need +25 points maybe more to make up in 1 off season. rarely happens.

they're not a playoff caliber team. they were way off last year, and their fans got way over exhuberant about a couple decent offseason signings. but both came with question marks. and even if they both worked out, it still wouldn't be enough to make them a playoff team.

They need at least 2 or 3 more pieces just to be a fringe team. probably 2 more top 2 pairing dmen, a 1st line centre, a good goalie.

Sens are very unlikely to be a playoff team in 23. Sabres have an oustide shot but will have to beat out the Pens, Islanders and Panthers for the final playoff spot. Not easy.

I put the odds on their current non-playoff streak to hit 10 years as pretty high.

Puckpedia has Sabres' odds at making the playoffs at 38.1% so unlikely, but not impossible. Sens odds are at 16.9%.

it's much more than that.

- strong division
- bad team, mess of organzation
- bad market, not attractive to players.
- nothing in their farm, or young players on their roster, that looks like the high end type of player that can lead a team out of the perennial NHL basement.
- somehow, with an owner that didn't spend, theyve managed to work themselves into an unfavourable contract situation. not a lot of cap space, not a lot of contracts that you'd look at and think they're great. And a few questionable ones.

where are they going to get the 4 or 5 pieces needed to lift them from an AHL caliber team?

Ottawa a welfare team in the NHL, yet they are paying Norris about $8M a season for less production than $950K Bunting. Besides the fact that the Sens have a tough time re-signing their top talent, shockingly, they only have a 4th and 5th pick in the 2023 draft and they are going to miss the playoffs. Oh yeah and 3 - 7ths
