your response clearly shows your knowledge level on this issue.
Here is some reality, then please reply in your knowledge-less usual fashion, it keeps yourself entertained, I guess.

From sportsnet.ca on Apr 12th, 2016

Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk isn't ruling out dealing any of his players, but he'll leave those decisions up to his new general manager.

Melnyk joined Sportsnet's "Tim & Sid" on Tuesday and was asked if he'd consider anyone on the Senators roster untradeable.

"No," he said.

When asked if that included Erik Karlsson, Melnyk said while the owner does have final say, that decision will be made by management.

"I'm not going to say anything other than ... first of all, I don't make those decisions. I let the coaches and the GMs make those decisions. They come to me when it's a big name, they come to me for everything in the end, but ... if they came in and had a deal on the table ... I can't keep them accountable if I don't let them take a shot.

"If they're wrong and wrong and wrong, then things change, but it's their team to coach and to manage, so if I stick my nose into it, who do I blame at the end but myself? (I'll) let them do their job. That's what they're paid (to do) and that's what they know how to do much better than I ever will."

Lol. Melnyk can say what he wants.

The phanuef and zib trades were moves that were financially driven first, not hockey driven. But you believe what you’re told instead of what’s in plain sight in front of you.

So Trading (Sens) players who were NOT playing for the Sens on the ice last season at the time of the trade (injured, healthy scratches, in the minors) for Phaneuf, who IS playing every game since became a Senator............ In your vast hockey knowledge, had nothing to do with the team on the ice, playing hockey............ and only with money................. not a combination of both.

When you can get a better player in free agency for less, if you don't have the requirement of any salary coming in, must have some dollars going out, it means the decision is more to do with money than the good of the team.

WIthout doubt there were better ways to spend that money, when you're looking from a salary cap perspective alone. In fact, I'd say, going forward there will continue to be better ways. When you factor in actual salary, maybe not.

But that means priority was not the on-ice product. It was the pocket books.

It was a short-term fix.

In 1-2 years, you’ll be back in same situation; paying a fringe nhler player big money. And the cycle will continue.

In honesty Sens would have been better off waiting out those contracts instead of taking on a longer term headache. I mean if they made they playoffs and did damage it would have been worth it. But....

Thing is. The only thing left of this trade at the end of the day is Phaneuf and his contract. Not sure that's a win imo.

Leafs have around 22 million in cap space after this season (before LTIR for Lupul and Horton). That should provide quite a lot of flexibility

See post above. I added a comment. Yup. Leafs will have cap space going forward and Sens will have Phaneuf contract. Bad trade. Like the Zibanejad and Brassard one. Let us not forget the picks given up.

I don't know what the heck you're talking about.

Since Phaneauf has come to Ottawa, he's played a regular shift, on the 1st or second pairing, and this season on the first PP unit.

The player he replaced on defense, has not played in the NHL since the trade.

That's not a headache, that's moving out broken and no longer needed spare parts, for a player who is contributing on the ice, each and every game. You can point to his contract all you want, but it's not a problem in Ottawa.

- D0PPELGANGER

Ummmm...wow...I'm glad the Leafs current management isn't stupid enough to think this way and dumped Phaneuf on the first sucker they could find.

I guess having Bobby Ryan is better than having him gone for nothing. Cause you know it's not a problem in Ottawa to have guys with bad contracts and it's better to have his bad contract than have no bad contract at all. Cause you know at least he plays shifts.

I know you're obsessed with players contracts, who is overpaid (in your opinion) who has a contract that's too long, which players have NTCs or NMCs etc etc......

Funny thing though, you totally ignore the fact that a contract that is "no good" for one team, may not be a problem for another team, and this is your blind spot.

Kessel's contract is not a problem for Pittsburgh, and neither is Clarkson's for Columbus........ but for some reason you seem to think Phaneauf's is for Ottawa is, but it's not ............ it's not an issue.

Ottawa had a few players who were never ever going to play for them again, for a number of reasons, such as not being good enough to stay in the NHL lineup on a regular basis or not in the teams' long term plans, and needed to be moved to open up a "contract" in the future to comply with the NHL's a 50 contract maximum rule.

Ottawa moved out spare parts A.K.A. un-wanted players, for players they deemed they could use in their future plans.

So as of today, Phaneuf plays top 4 minutes and first PP unit minutes, no one in Ottawa cares about his contract, amount or term ............ he's productive part of the team, and the spare parts A.K.A. un-wanted players he was essentially trades for, are no longer playing in the NHL, as far as I know.

Somewhere down the line, when his play drops to point where management deems it's not good enough to remain in the lineup, then they'll make the appropriate decision for the teams' (then) future plans, just as they did for Jared Cowen, Colin Greening and Milan Michalek.

Now reply and try to convince someone how his contract somehow is a problem, but I doubt you'll convince any Senator fans that it is.

Well said. Sens have significantly improved over last year in goals against. Last year they were 26th in the NHL (goals against), this year they are 11th. What is the difference in terms of rotation....Phaneuf.

I can only assume that going from 9th to 22nd in goals for can only be attributed to Phaneuf as well then.

It is an infinitely more complex issue than one player, it always is. But in terms of player personnel Phaneuf is the only significant defensive change over last year. And, with Anderson missing as many games as he has, Phaneuf's maturity has been a huge asset.
