just a second rounder at this point but I would have rather they been sellers still. bozak, polak, hunwick.

they only teams they'll beat to get anywhere deep this season are in-division. no one in the Atlantic division stands a shot at anything.

Deflect deflect deflect ......... does not hide the fact that the leafs abandoned the Shanaplan, threw away their top scorer (24 goals) in the AHL, plus a extremely valuable second round draft choice, for 21 games of Boyle.
- D0PPELGANGER

The Leafs had 3 second round picks, they still have one.

the Leafs are in a playoff spot, ahead of schedule..lots of good things happening.

meltdown has begun.

2nd round pick isnt that valuable to toronto considering their depth of youth picks and prospects. Do you even Froese?

They paid going rate and filled a glaring need. Nothing wrong with the deal.

They are backing the kids, trying to get them to the playoffs for that experience. Nothing was abandoned

How wrong can you be? You made an absolutely ridiculous comment.

Also he doesn't have more than double the next guy. Johnson, a prospect (you.may need to look that up) has 17 goals. Kapanen, again a prospect has 16 goals (only played 33)

- walshyleafsfan

twice as many goals, than the guy in second place ....... in points.

Is toronto better off today, without a highly coveted 2nd round pick, plus there top goal AHL scorer, and leader in points............ and now with Boyle for 21 games (plus any games if they make the playoffs) ?

The Shanaplan, as outlined by many leaf fans in this forum, was for them to unload veterans (at the trade deadline), stockpile more picks and prospects, promote from the AHL etc etc ...... as least that was what they were saying last fall.

Yes they are better now with Boyle. That's a dumb question. Do you really not know?

Ummm, what you outlined at the shanaplan is exactly what they've done. They unloaded vets and picked up picks and promoted from within

Yeah that's last fall. Year 1. This is year 2. Did you think the Leafs would trade veterans for picks every single year, just because they're veterans.

Maybe we could do it by birthday? On a player's 29th birthday he is traded for picks. That would be something

The plan is fluid. And ahead of schedule, if you haven’t noticed.

And it’s the Chicago model to a sustainable winner:

Step 1: Suck and get a few high draft picks (#5, #8, #4, #1 in last 5 years). Accumulate a ton of picks/prospects over a couple years (20 picks over the last 2 years – all still with the leafs). Use every available salary cap tactic to acquire picks/prospects.

Step 2: Build a winner. Become buyers in February (boyle, probably a depth dman) and sellers in June (probably bozak, jvr). Look to sign/trade for a couple bigger name players (?). Always make sure you’re recouping picks you lose. Rarely let your own guys with value walk as UFA’s.

the Leafs are a good team, progressing way ahead of schedule... its not some fluff PDO bender pushing them into a playoff spot. Rookies are leading the team.

They have stockpiled picks and prospects since 2014 when shanahan took over..teams are fluid..things are always moving and there is no exact way to build a team.

It may work out and give them that push they needed..it may not. The trade deadline is not over and you can always trade players later for more picks.

And this should answer the question 29 other fanbases wanted to know regarding the difference between the Oilers rebuild and the Leafs rebuild. The Leafs are actively looking at every way possible to improve the organization, be it Russian free agents, the draft, through trades, North American free agents etc.

They don't just want to draft a single guy in the 1st round every year and then call it a good year

They're better THIS YEAR. Not by much mind you. Going forward? Not really. I mean, I guess it's arguable that having a veteran with playoff experience can be beneficial to the development of the massive amount of kids on the roster, but that's about all.

Like I say, I would have preferred they unload more players for one more year.

much better off today.

last fall was last fall with so many rookies it was impossible to predict a playoff battle to the end. things have changed aince then and its all due to the emergence of the youth.

leafs wou be better served giving the youth the help and tools they need to succeed rather than the opposite.
