keep in mind i do think he is a good goalie and i understand he was a decent prospect. im just saying 7-8 games is too early to call him the next luongo and a "bonafide" #1 goalie. thats just laughable.
edit: dont think i didnt notice how you left out his stats from the last 10 games he played in the SEL. his playoff performance was pretty lackluster. |

that's his 2007-2008 numbers, moron.
look at his 2008-2009 numbers.
actually, those stats can't possibly be right either... games played 10, games lost 31, games won 0?
yea
edit: ah, they're incomplete stats, it's 31 GA... way to make those clear
and even though his numbers in his first playoff experience don't look great, he played well enough to earn the nickname "Monster"... so the team infront of him was probably just that bad. |

He had the greatest playoff run ever for a goalie. You're looking at the wrong stats.
"Gustavsson led Farjestads to the Swedish Elite League championship by allowing just 14 goals in 13 playoff games for a 1.03 goals-against average and .961 save percentage. He broke the SEL's shutout streak record by going more than 240 minutes without surrendering a goal in the playoffs."
1.03 GAA and .961 save%. Amazing numbers.

"In 42 regular-season games, Gustavsson posted four shutouts and led the League with a 1.96 GAA and .932 save percentage in 42 games. It was the first time since 2006 that a goalie in the league posted a GAA under 2.00."

Be careful.................you may be setting yourself up the way some hab fans did a couple of seasons ago when they anointed Price and the second coming of St. Patrick.
It is still way to early to say whether or not he is the answer to every GM's wet dream. Let him play and let the ships fall where they may.
Oh yeah..........there were a lot of teams slobbering over Fabian Brunnstrom a little while back. So don't be thinking that playing well in the SEL is going to translate to instant success in the NHL...............after all the leafs only have 11 points in their first 15 games.............that only pro-rates to only 60 points over the full season, if they continue at their current pace.

and earlier on in the season, they were on pace for 10 points... in a matter of 7 games they went from being on pace for 10 points to being on pace for 60, in the next 7 they could be on pace for 93 points, and 7 games after that they could be on pace for 114 points.

Or they could be on pace for 40 points, and the next 7 30 points, and the next 7 20 points.

that's true, but the fact of the matter is that the Leafs are a team thats playing better and better. Saying they're on pace for 60 points isn't fully representative of the facts |

The thing is, Brunnstrom wasn't a star in the SEL. He was seen as a prospect there with great upside. His numbers in the SEL weren't even that good.
Gustavsson on the other hand, was a superstar.
But yeah, you have to take it slow and see how it plays out. Wouldn't want to rush to judgement like those Bruins fans awaiting Taylor Hall's arrival after 5 games. |

You clearly did not understand when I said "if they continue at their current pace." in my post.
Do I expect them to continue playing the way they have since the beginning of the season? No, I don't, and I said this to highlight how much better they have to play for the remainder of the season, IF they have any playoff aspirations.
They will need a minimum of 81 points in the 67 games they have left.
In order to accumulate 81 points, they will need to win 6 out of every 10 games they play for the rest of the season............or at a .602 points percentage when you account for "loser points" in lieu of wins. |

And if anyone was saying those things you'd be right. I have not heard one single person on the radio, in letters to the paper or even on the Internet where many idiots dwell say that Gustavsson is the next Luongo. Not even the next Lundqvist even though his numbers were better in the SEL. So you're trying to make it sound worse than it is...but you're failing. Bad.
As for a "bonafide #1" that's a bit of a harder to determine phrase. People are saying he could be a starter for the Leafs...but nobody has said he is a "bonafide #1" as in "no matter what team he played for he'd be the starter" only that a goalie with a save percentage over .900 and a GAA under 3.00 makes him a starter for us as the other option is a goalie with ~.850 SV% and ~5.00 GAA.
So check your rhetoric. You're not fooling anyone...probably not even yourself. |

It would appear that things may have started to go backwards once again. First, it would appear that Kessel is not a potential superstar in the tradition of a Crosby, Malken, Stamkos or Ovechkin. Would you trade two first round picks for him, not likely. He is more than Jason Blake but, he needs a superior playmaker to help him extend his game. He is a good addition for any team, but not the leader or savior that some in Leaf nation may have portrayed him as being.
Second, Luke Schenn seems to be regressing under the weight of the current regime. His skill level and judgement is coming under increasing pressure the more he is exposed.
The season is now 25% over, at least we have the opportunity of a great draft selection next year. You have to admit that Brian Blowhard seems to have this ship headed in the right direction. |

If you define "turn the season around" as "not finish dead last" then I agree with you...if you meant "finish outside of a top 5 pick" then I agree with you...but if you meant "make the playoffs" I will laugh in your general direction.
While it's not impossible, if we use the 93 point marker we'd have to play roughly .640 hockey for the rest of the season to finish with that point total. Right now we're barely above .300. So we'd have to double our point production for the 60+ games remaining in the season.
If we're lucky we'll finish near .500 and the pick will be about 6th or 7th overall. |

I don't think playoffs are possible. Success over the rest of the season requires that they show improvement that allows leaf nation to develop some hope that next year will be a more promising result. If they lose tonight I think there will be a mix of real anguish and indifference. Of the two the indifference is the worst. When you spend the summer looking forward to the beginning of the season, it is so frustrating to think that the season may end before you even look at the December schedule.

deserved better, thought Leafs outplayed them by a long way in the third period. |

The leafs should have won but Leclaire stole it for the Sens.
3-16 is way below even what I expected. That's a pace for 13 wins all season. |

I can't understand why they've only won 3 freaking games. They looked dominant at times, in the third period.
Kessel can score, but they need more than him scoring. |
