You also have to factor in Dougie Hamilton. It's not a Seguin vs Kessel issue.

I've heard more reasons for Kessel not to sign with toronto and becoming a UFA, but it's all just speculation right now, but if he's not signed by this time next year, I would highly suspect he's going to become an UFA.

He and his agent have both been very clear about him wanting to stay in Toronto. It's not a huge concern.

People also said Lupul was as good as gone once Carlyle was hired as Leafs coach. and he couldn't have re-signed faster. I would be surprised if Kessel leaves. The best financial deal will be in Toronto.

Im sure they would come right out and say if he wanted to leave, because that happens all the time.

Wasn't Lupul on his way out?

Money will be the most important factor. The most money is in Toronto.

I've heard Kessel would like a more pressure-filled market to play in. Yet in 09', Nasvhille wanted him and he said no.

My prediction? In the summer of 2013', Nonis offers Kessel a huge 8 year extension, and he re-signs immediately.

Lol, I think Lupul kind of knew a good thing when he saw it. Same as Horcoff.

Only saying, I heard from so many people Lupul was gone once Carlyle was hired. That did not happen. He re-signed so fast instead,

AS long as an 8 year extension is offered, Kessel re-signs imo.

Stupid argument, every time it's made.

Nobody says they want to leave. But guys who want to leave don't often come out and say how much they want to stay.

Please explain why you think "The best financial deal will be in Toronto."?

Before Kessel's contract expires the leafs have to decide on about 5 UFAs and about 8 RFAs.

How could anyone possibly know the leafs Sap space going into Kessels final year?

There definitely will be other teams with way more cap space, as toronto has never been near the bottom of the league when it comes to spending on player's salaries.

Also there are 5 more UFAs and 2 RFAs that toronto may want to keep under contract at the same time Kessel's deal is up. So how anyone can say it's going to be a slam dunk to keep Kessel in toronto because they can offer the best deal, to me is quite a long stretch.

Signing Phil Kessel to a big money deal until he is 35 years old sounds like a harmless idea..... what could possibly go wrong?

No it doesn't.

8 year deals allowed if player re-signs with current team.

RogerRoper was saying the Leafs will sign him for the full 8 years at "the most money he will get from any team"

Phil will be 27 in the season his new contract kicks in making him 34 when the contract expires.

I personally think signing any player that's in their prime "now" to a big money 8 year deal is dumb. By year 5 (age 32) the player will likely have regressed from the player they are now and you will still be paying them "star money"..

8 years take him to 33, so neither is right. move along.

EDIT: makes him 34 at the end.

No.

He is 25 now.

26 next year (last year on current deal)

27 first year of deal

28 2nd year

29 3rd year

30 4th year

31 5th year

32 6th year

33 7th year

34 8th year

IMO signing Kessel to what RogerRoper said (More money than any team would offer as a UFA) for any more than a few years (5 max) is complete cap suicide down the road.

It's not cap suicide to sign good players.... and you don't know what other team would pay. Is Suter and PArise worth what they got??

I don't see where he said a $number, only a length.

What's wrong with signing Phil till he's 34? He hasn't missed a game for the Leafs since starting with them, and since he doesn't get very physical. I expect him to be very good into his 30's. I'd rather sign him till he's 34 than someone like Lucic.

The Leafs can sign Phil for 8 years. That's allowed. Every other team would be a 7 year max. deal.

The Leafs cap situation is very good. And since they can give Phil a longer deal than anyone else, it's safe to say his best financial deal is in Toronto.

Toronto has about 25+ million in cap space going into next summer. They are one of the teams in the best cap situation.

Why would anyone give him a max contract if he continues his on scoring slump?

Because he doesn't just score goals.
