Spezza still had two years on his contract, so I don't see how that played into it, in your scenario. Alfredsson was coming back for one year, so would not be around when Spezza's contract was up. - Doppleganger
That's an honest to goodness typo. I should have said "Gonchar and Alfredsson". |

You could say they overacheived in a shortened season... or you could say they took a step back because they let their veteran leadership walk.
Their moves point to a franchise with no clear direction - Feeling Glucky?

You could say that.
But that would make you like Dopps.
And nobody wants to be that way. |

If everyone was right more often than they were wrong, then it would be pretty boring around here.

Well they traded their pick to get their top goal scorer, Bobby Ryan, with 23 goals. Not a bad trade.

top-10 pick for 2nd line production, no defensive ability, and no heart.
amazing trade.
lets not forget a top prospect and 2nd rounder as well.
What a nightmare. |

“It’s like we were frozen for 30 minutes of the hockey game,” head coach Randy Carlyle said. “We didn’t pick up the puck and skate with it at all. And that’s showing signs of being nervous, tense, [lacking] confidence, not wanting to make a mistake which led to more offensive zone time."

The Toronto Maple Leafs have spent most of a season living dangerously, and managing it. They have spent most of a season playing without fear, even as they were out-shot by vast margins, even as they clung to a playoff spot. They have skated and scored and goaltended their way out of trouble, and they have flown above the horizon.

This is Nonis’s team. It was his decision to extend Phaneuf and Kessel, marrying this team to these two high-end, but flawed, players. It was his decision not to make a move at the trade deadline when it would appear that teams in acquisition mode — notably Montreal (Thomas Vanek), Tampa Bay (Ryan Callahan) and Detroit (David Legwand) — benefited from their moves.

nightmare for me?
Leafs are miles ahead of the Sens, and still building their team up. Disappointing that they'll probably miss the playoffs, sure, but at least we've got something to look forward to this draft, as well as next year, knowing our team is run by guys who don't just see it as a piggy bank. - Feeling Glucky?
Miles ahead?? realy??
leafs = .541
Senators = .500

People keep going on about the leafs having a 1st and the sens do not but the leafs have been bad for a while with early picks and looks like they are still going to miss the playoffs. |

Last few 1sts, Schenn, Kadri, Percy, Biggs, Reilly, Gauthier.
Schenn is obviously a bust, but we still managed to get JVR for him... Kadri's pretty damned good, Percy, while still a prospect, looks pretty good, Biggs looks like a bust, Rielly is very impressive, and Gauthier hasn't really had time to show what he's made of... he wasn't drafted to be a top-6 guy though.
I think the Leaf's struggles at drafting are overstated.
And you can't draft a good player if you don't have a pick |

Exactly, but Kessel is.
Elite scoring wingers are worth spending those picks on.
Bobby Ryan isn't. |

So Bobby Ryan averages 31.1 goals for every 82 games he's played in the NHL, and that's not Elite???
But Phil Kessel who averages 31.4 goals for every 82 games he's played in the NHL, is elite?
So about a third of a goal, for every 82 games played, makes Kessel worth Seguin and Hamilton?
Silly leaf fan.

All i am pointing out is the leafs missed the playoffs 7 years in a row and yet are not in a playoff spot this year. Lots of good draft picks for a team on the outside looking in. Your also comparing them to a team that only missed the playoffs two of those years
