No. Because the NHL, by request of the Ottawa senators, disallowed the broadcasting of leafs games in the senators region, knowing that they would never be able to compete for the English speaking Ontario audience. To this day, they even choose to play weekend games in the afternoon, to avoid competing with the nationally televised leaf games.

You have it backwards my friend.

It was the leafs who staunchly defended their turf, and did not want to do the same deal that the Senators struck with the Habs in 1992 - 93.

This was repeatedly discussed ad-nauseam on the local Sport Talk radio station OSR at the time...............because leaf fans were phoning in and whining about how the leafs owners at the time, and ever since have screwed them by not sharing all of Ontario with the Senators.

So this is a good rehash of your original BS point.

You have posted nothing to back this up, outside of other fans talking about it.

Prock's way of looking at it has the same amount of evidence, with more logic behind it.

If the Senators wanted to compete with the Leafs for an audience, why would they so frequently avoid it?

But they DON'T compete with the Leafs, and instead choose NOT to broadcast in direct competition with the Leafs.

Here are some whiny little leaf fans, who live inthe Ottawa region, complaining that the leafs games are not available in Ottawa.

You'll never find Habs fans whining becasue of the deal the Sens made with the Habs, and the same deal the leafs turned down.

Leafs TV is a Canadian English language Category B regional specialty channel owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. Leafs TV broadcasts programming related to the Toronto Maple Leafs National Hockey League club and its American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

Leafs TV is only available within the Maple Leafs' "home market" of Ontario, excluding the Ottawa Valley (which is in the home market of the Ottawa Senators).

You can understand why the Sens chose not to compete with the Leafs and have their games televised in Ottawa though, right? They rely on Leaf fans in their arena for ticket sales right now, if they can deny them the ability to watch Leafs games, eventually they may be able to convert them over.

Not to mention revenue sharing.

It's alright, the Leafs (and Habs) support quite a few franchises. You'd think Sens fans would be a little more appreciative that we allow them to keep their franchise though. You must admit, it's a little bit funny when they start these futile attempts to restrict Leaf fans from buying tickets.

As an ower why wouldn't you want to sell as many tickets as possible regardless of who they cheer for. Over time more leaf fans in Ottawa will convert especially if the leafs continue the trend of non playoff teams.

Excellent point, and what owner would NOT want to expand it's viewership and increase their ad revenues?

The NHL sets the markets, however, the Owners run the NHL through Bettman. When a couple of owners make a deal that is mutually beneficial, they inform the NHL, and situations like the shared market deal between Ottawa and Montreal, are enforced.

Prior to 1992 93 Montreal and toronto shared Eastern Ontario, and we in Ottawa would receive Montreal & leafs "local" or "regional" games, some on the same night.

But that changed when the NHL in it's wisdom, re-admitted the Ottawa Senators, one of the original Four NHL teams.

take a good look at this map.

Ottawa and Montreal share everything East of Belleville/Pembroke right to St. Johns NFLD.

Detroit Shares a partial region with the Hawks and the Blues, the Hurricanes partially share with the Preds just to point out a few besides the Ottawa/Montreal shared region.

Point being that SMART owners know how to sell the NHL in their markets to the mutual benefit of both both or more teams.

Do you not think Detroit would like to have access to Windsor and the surrounding area?
Do you not think Buffalo would like to have access to St. Catharines and Hamilton?

It would be a a money making proposition for sure for Both Detroit and Buffalo.

But what seems to be the common denominator in the cases of Ottawa, Detroit and Buffalo wanting a deal to broadcast their local games to a larger audience in Southern Ontario????

Of course Ottawa, Detroit and Buffalo would allow the team in that "region" access to their markets to help grow the game and make more money for every owner involved.

But for some reason the team in toronto does not want to share their market with anyone, logical as it would seem.

Sucks to be an NHL fan in toronto and southern Ontario, as the leafs don't want to make deals with Ottawa, Detroit and Buffalo to provide more access to more games.

Pony up the dough, and buy NHL CI I guess.

I would think you would. But the Senators management has suggested they’d like to limit tickets going to Leaf fans, as they’ve deemed it a problem.

Over time more leaf fans in Ottawa will convert especially if the leafs continue the trend of non playoff teams.
- jordan456789

Well perhaps that’s tied to your first question. Maybe they don’t want to sell too many tickets to Leaf fans, as that is conducive to an atmosphere of Leaf fans outnumbering Sens fans in their own building, and that makes it feel like more of a home game for the Leafs. I can see that hindering many converting over to Sens fans. That, and the Sens have never won a playoff series against the Leafs. Without any major wins over them, I’d think that would keep Leaf fans from switching over.

Interesting though, I’d say the Sens trying to restrict Leaf fans from buying tickets to their games, very closely aligns to them refusing to allow Leaf games to be broadcast in Ottawa.

Hummmmm, but why do they allow a MUCH MUCH better team than the leafs, like Montreal, to broadcast their local/regional games into Eastern Ontario from the Quebec Ontario border to Belleville/Pembroke???

Your logic is servery warped my friend.

The evidence points to the leafs, as they don't allow Detroit and Buffalo games across the Ontario border, and the Senators and Canadiens have had the deal to broadcast into each other's regions for over twenty years now.
e

So the leafs are the team that does not other teams games into their market, because for freaking sure they would have lost thousands of fans to the Wings, Sabres and Senators.

With such a pathetic crappy team for the past decade the leafs have managed to keep their fan-base solid by eliminating better teams games into their market.

look at the map, the leafs only share northern Ontario with the Jets, so the NHL fans there can see more hockey games in a season than anyone living in the GTA.

The tickets sales and tv broadcast rights are not connected.

It's well know that the leafs fans, the ones who attend games in Ottawa at least, seem to cause more problems in the stands, than the Canadiens fans who are much better behaved.

I've been to a few leafs in Ottawa games, and Habs in Ottawa games over the years, and there is a difference, and ask anyone else who've attended games in Ottawa involving the leafs, and they'll tell you the same thing.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have NEVER made any attempts to restrict Ottawa Senaturds fans from buying tickets to Leaf games. All the evidence points to the Senators franchise making attempts to divert Leaf fans from gaining access to being an audience at Sens games, NOT the Toronto Maple Leafs. Given this evidence, which has been very clearly documented, I think it’s quite clear that the Ottawa Senaturds refused to give Leaf fans in Ottawa the ability to watch Leaf games, and forced the NHL to restrict Leaf games being broadcast in Senaturds region.

It’s actually surprising that a city “that fun forgot” can’t support their hockey team. It’s such a terrible city, you’d think their residents would be clamouring for interesting/fun things to do.
