Just because the leafs, who were as high as third in the Conference earlier in the season, "went back to their crap selves" doesn't mean other teams will follow suit.
Since the first week of February, the leafs have trended down, while most of the other teams in the East have either maintained thier pace of play, or trended up when compared to the leafs.
It's the leafs that you should focus on, not sitting there waiting for the Sens to pull a "leaf plummet".
Don't worry, you'll have great day in the near future, when the Senators get beaten and eliminated from the playoffs. - Doppleganger
Actually, I heard the other day the Leafs have the worst record in the league since the all star break.
Habs were (at the time) just 1 spot above them in terms of suckage.
that said, chin up, with the Leafs not there, you might win a round. - prock
Do you really think that if the leafs, with their current roster, could have made the playoffs, survived long enough to meet the Senators and beat them in a seven game series???
The (most likely) best case scenario for the Senators is to finish in sixth, and face the Panthers. The next best case scenario, but not likely to happen is to catch the Bruins and jump up to 2nd overall............but even with the injuries the Bruins have now, it's almost a sure bet they'll hold onto their current seed.

I think you're missing the point again. Not surprising.

If you'll forgive me for not falling for the bait, I do admit to being nervous about the next hypothetical meeting between the Sens and Leafs in the playoffs... I really wanna win that one...
As for a "depth playoff spot," I'll just say this: at the beginning of the season some Leafs fans were making fun of us for being "miles and miles" (I will never use that phrase again) behind their team. Now some Leafs fans are making fun of us for making the playoffs when we don't have a chance (or is that a shot?) at winning the cup.
I will personally never regret seeing my team in the playoffs. Even if we were swept, there's just a level of excitement you experience that far exceeds the "ooh, top 10 draft pick" level...

Well, the irony is, I'm sure you can agree that the Sens have nowhere near the type of players needed to go anywhere, and with guys like Kuba, Gonchar, and Alfredsson set to retire, nowhere near the type of prospects to assemble the type of team needed to go anywhere. So, having veterans like that prop the team, unexpectedly stay healthy, and contribute by having the best years they've had in many years, along with guys like Spezza and Michalek actually stay healthy, which you can't normally expect in most years, it really doesn't do them much good.
that said, you still have the same crap roster that has tremendously overachieved this year. It doesn't leave them any better in the long run.

Agreed, we don't have the players to go anywhere, apart from the possibility of doing a little first-round damage if we draw the right opponent.
Where I can't agree at this point is your inference that the young guys have peaked already, and that we're dead in the water as soon as Alfie, Gonchar and Kuba leave. Our coaching staff includes the two head-coaches from last year's OHL finals, which hopefully (from my perspective) means they're used to helping young players develop. The Calder Cup run in Bingo will (again) hopefully teach the value of hard work and sacrifice. And we have a number of prospects in Sweden and the CHL (plus a couple of "maybes" still in Bingo) that will hopefully add to our offensive depth going forward.
There are no guarantees, but I'm not as worried about this team going forward as I was 6 months ago. I'm just a fan, not a prognosticator...

The most likely opponent for the Senators in the first round appear to be the Bruins.
Tim Thomas has owned the Senators over the past number of seasons, and it would be the biggest first round upset in recent history if somehow the Senators made it past the Bruins.
But making the playoffs in the first year of a three year re-build is icing on the cake, and it'll be a great series to watch, win or lose ( I'd bet on lose).
The future looks bright for next season, and the forward progress should continue.
The sens don't measure up with anyone. They'll be fifth barring a disaster of epic proportions by another team. They're the worst in the division at every position. - prock

Prock talks directly out of his arrogant ass on a regular basis. Is this supposed to surprise anybody that he's dead wrong about something yet again? - Cape Breton Bruins
these posts were directed more at Doppledouche, who seemed to think that the Sens were not really as bad as suggested, and may actually not be in the division basement, like many were suggesting (or the league basement, as many are really suggesting).
Certainly, it's early, but it appears as though the Sens are as people expected. A roster devoid of very much NHL caliber talent. - prock
I guess myself, as someone who watches and follows the Senators closely, had a better grasp on how the Senators season would unfold.
On the other hand, the "people" who do not closely follow the Sens, and simply take what the so called experts take on the various Sports media outlets and publications as gospel and then "go with that" did not come as close to my predictions.
Don't get me wrong, I did NOT see them making the playoffs, but I did not see them finishing in the 15th spot in the Conference.

Now just beat the (frank)ing Bruins in the 1st round and all will be perfect.

Boston has "owned" Ottawa this year, for all but the last game they meet. They play once more before the end of the season, and there could be some "messages" sent.

You've got to be kidding me. The Sens offense sucks. They have one line, and then a bunch of plugs. You want to talk about scoring drying up? Spezza is scoring not only WAY above what he's done for the past 3 years, but above his career average, which includes the years him, Alfie, and Heatley racked up ridiculous point totals. Michalek is scoring MILES above what you can reasonably expect from him. Alfie is going on 39. Colin Greening is scoring at a higher pace than he did in the AHL. Gonchar, 37, suddenly playing like he's in his prime again. Not a chance in hell Karlsson keeps scoring like has been.
And you think the LEAFS scoring will dry up?
The Sens scoring is more likely to dry up, and probably drop off more significantly than the Leafs..... And then, you're left with a team that is giving up the most goals in the NHL. By a wide margin.
Ottawa is going to be a basement team this year. It's pretty much a sure thing.
And even if it does.... With Reimer in net, the goals against is pretty consistent with what it was last year, to start the season. With him back in net, the Leafs will be able to compensate for a bit of a drop in goal scoring.
Besides, as much as the Leafs have some guys scoring in bunches right now, there are others that haven't completely gotten going yet.
They may not stay where they are. I fully expect them to slip a bit. But not to the basement. Where I expect the Sens to slip to. - prock
