The yotes are quite clearly doing what they're doing based on a solid defensive system. Their roster is incredibly unimpressive.
Its not like there was a huge difference between the 08/09 roster, that was a basement dweller for quite some time, and the 09/10 roster, that put up 110 points.
Where would you the say the difference came from? And now that they've dumped turris they're breaking through that first round barrier. - prock
Eye of the beholder I suppose. I look at the Yotes and I see a team. Greater then the sum of any one part. |

I don't think Carolina or Tampa cared much that they weren't considered contenders because of their paper roster when they won cups. - sens rock
Tampa wasn't a contender? That's harsh considering they were 2nd in points in the NHL that year. Carolina was tied for 3rd with 112 points when they won the cup too. |

And that's the thing. You can have a great roster that doesn't play to its potential, as a team. Or you can have a bad roster that plays smart and does fine. The leafs, IMO, have a perfectly fine roster (not great, but still pretty decent), that doesn't play that way.
You need both to win a cup. A great roster that plays as a team.
I don't think the Leafs would be a top team if they were put in the same situation. But I see no reason why THAT roster couldn't do just as well as the Yotes. With the proper coaching staff, and them buying into a system, they would be a playoff team, quite easily. honestly, look at what it did for the Yotes. Perennial basement team gets new coach, new system, suddenly puts out 30 more points, and does it consistently from there forth. Its hard to argue with.
Now I actually don't think Wilson is a terrible coach like some Leaf fans will profess. But what he was doing (or trying anyway), was not working at all. There are quite a few players on the Leafs that have develloped into solid players. Why aren't they able to translate that into results? |

But he's commenting on the roster alone. They are probably two of the weaker cup winning rosters of recent years, but there are still a LOT of VERY good players there. Lecavalier at his best, Richards, St Louis.... Are there any teams in the NHL right now with a stronger top three forwards? Arguably not even Pittsburgh, when you get to the third forward. |

Tampa had a great team on paper. St. Louis, Stillman in his prime, Richards, Lecavalier, Kubina in his prime, Khabibulin in his prime, and on top of that a couple pretty good vets like Andreychuck and Taylor.
Carolina had a solid team too and then they brought in some solid veterans for their playoff run.
If neither team was considered a cup contender on paper it was because they were in markets nobody cared about or payed attention to rather than because their actual rosters weren't solid. |

They played that series with a lot of heart but couldn't overcome Lundqvist. Very positive season overall for the Sens. |

Last team Standing in the Division.
Freaking Rangers blocked 23 shots last night, have to give them credit in that department. Can they keep it up?
Without Alfredsson for practically three games, the Sens did better than most people thought.
Now if Alfredsson doesn't get injured...................................... |

Out of curiousity, how do you feel about having such an important part of your team nearing forty years old? |

seeing as they won 2 of 3 games with him out, pretty good. some excellent prospects ready to make the pro jump. might not have an effect next year but definitely a good core for the future. |

Out of curiousity, how do you feel knowing such important players like Kessel, Grabovski and Lupul couldn't deliver what a 40 year old Alfie could? Must be disheartening? |

2nd youngest team in the league bro.
Also, Grabovski is past his prime and his play will seriously decline in the next few years.
LOL!
Edit: Leafs a great team, on paper. |

i think with the results you see with edmonton and toronto that a mix of young guys and veterans is the way to go. you need veterans like alfie and phillips to guide the young guys on how to be a pro.

You didn't know?
Alfredsson is the only great player in the NHL that didn't win the Cup (if he retires). |
