when i was really little, like 5 or 6, i used to throw the controller to the ground when i died in a game. 2 broken controllers that were replaced by poopty 3rd party controllers later and i learned my lesson and never did it again.

nostalgia goggles. cod4 was the first awful cod. hilariously unbalanced guns, killstreaks that count towards the next killstreak if you die and respawn while the chopper is out, fragx3 with nuke grenades, damage glitches (acog making snipers deal more damage). the maps were good but it was a mess overall.

It introduced paid map packs, xp progression and unlocks and a number of other things that all made the entire genre worse because it was wildly successful and everyone copied it.

The Gears 1 maps were free. Halo 2 had paid map packs first but they were available on disc day 1 so it was kind of stuck in between the older style expansion and newer style paid DLC map packs so I excluded it.

Maybe Halo 3 got its first map pack out before CoD4 actually. The game came out around the same time so it's possible. CoD4 was the huge trend setter though. Now we have poop like Battlefield Premium. Maps that cost more than the full game lol.

The PC expansions for shooters were a lot larger in scale usually, like CoD United Offensive. That was pretty much an entire new game.

Battlefield did that with BC2 and their Vietnam pack which was actually pretty cool. It died pretty quickly though, not many people played it. That sucked.

Just adding maps and charging for them splits a community. It's dumb imho.
