Did you know that when they lose the hobbits and Aragorn lets out an angry yell after kicking a helmet it's because he actually broke his damn foot on the helmet?

Also in the ambush scene where Aragorn is down and Lurtz throws a dagger at him, the dude playing Lurtz actually threw the knife by accident instead of miming the action and Mortensen had to legit bat it out of the air with his sword.

Yeah both of those are badass.

Viggo almost died or got seriously injured like 12 times. Almost drowned multiple times when they had to film him floating down the river after the warg ambush, and also because the horse nearly crushed him multiple times when it went to lay down.

Another way that LOTR managed to get it right magically, New Line Cinema thought that one of the Hobbits needed to die or the films wouldn't carry enough emotion. It even made it to a version of script but Jackson held firm to the books in that part.

The scene where they calmly paddle down the River Anduin in Fellowship was also supposed to be an action scene that only didn't happen because of filming schedule and mother nature butting heads. Thank goodness!

The Uruk-Hai war chant just prior to the attack at Helms Deep wasn't part of the script, but came about as the guys in suits were rugby fans and did rugby chants between takes to kill time for fun and then it morphed into the roars and chest pounding and weapon clanging prior to the Uruk charge.

In the original script, for whatever reason (maybe related to New Line wanting a Hobbit death) Frodo became a murderer at the end of the film inside Mount Doom. Instead of Gollum and Frodo fighting over the ring and that leading to Frodo's near demise and Gollum's death, they originally had Frodo throwing Gollum into the lava and then running away with Sam. But the characters helped influence it sticking closer to the books and Jackson agreed.

Those are some stuffs I thought about at work today becuase I've got LOTR brain hard.

There is a level of improv and on-set on-the-spot convergence of ideas that just worked out so well. Its really a miracle how well the films came together when there were so many intentionally planned bungles.

Like Frodo telling Sam to go home while on the Ciritih Ungol. The script had Frodo yelling/screaming at Sam, and in the books its kind of unclear. But Elijah Wood did a ton of takes yelling at Sean Astin in a variety of ways, but on reshoots (a year apart!) they decided to try it again and Elijah did one take where he said it all mournfully and soft. That made it into the film.

The scenes where Aragorn takes care of his clothing and sharpens his sword were actually Viggo's idea, and he learned how to stitch and use a wetstone for those scenes.

Also a lot of the scenes where Aragorn talks all soft and nice to horses was Viggo's own ideas on how Aragorn would handle those situations.
