Thin Red Line is very comtemplative for a war movie.
It depends a lot of your mood IMHO, it's either love or hate.

there is definitely a chance that you might not like it. there aren't a lot of similar movies being made so it's hard to be like "if you like x, you'll like the thin red line", malick kind of just does his own thing. if you loathe the movie you can probably cross the tree of life and maybe even the new world off your list as well.

unlikable characters, no real message/theme, dumbass plot, forgettable soundtrack™, pacing issues, and it's just a complete waste of acting talent in general.

but hey the first 30 minutes are ok

I hear you. Loved the movie the first time saw it, but 2nd time, I wasn't in the mood at all and stopped after the hill bunker battle - which was all I wanted to watch again, when I think about it.

Speaking of depressing movies, I'm still pissed at everyone who was involved in the making of Requiem for a dream. It depressed me for days.
