those are two separate divisions Marty. The playoffs will no long be decided by entire conferences anymore.

Edit: Also agree about the Bruins in general. Wouldn't surprise me if they finished second or third in the Atlantic. They have a tough time staying motivated over an entire season.

Its a pretty soft division. 2 extra punching bags added with Florida and TBay to Toronto and Buffalo.

I could see a healthy Ottawa at the top then Boston-Detroit/Montreal.

Its a division that will be elite in 2-3 years. Ottawa always gets counted out so it would surprise me if they made the playoffs but 1st is a stretch IMO. Habs are the defending division champs of the NE so they should be in the mix if Price can elevate his game to match the rest of the squad. Wings are the Wings. Nobody wants to give the Leafs a chance but I believe Carlye is a very good coach and will have them super competitive.

Detroit could easily take advantage of the weaker competition and finish first for sure. Like them in the division, excited to get to watch Datsyuk play a bunch this year.

I think they have the talent for it, if they can be primarily healthy, and like you said the Bruins find themselves coasting through regular seasons. Last year Ottawa was pretty well without Spezza and Cowen the entire time and had big injuries to Karlsson, Michalek, Anderson, etc. Adding Ryan to replace Alfredsson is a big upgrade.

The Habs are a curious case. I didn't think of them as the best team in the division last year and I still don't think of them as it now. They're definitely in the top 4 though.

I think Carlyle is an awful coach and that roster is awful. Dave Bolland sucks. Clarkson sucks. Bozak sucks. Phaneuf sucks. Bernier is overrated. No idea how they're going to fit Franson and Kadri under the cap either.

The big question mark is Detroit's defence. I was surprised it held up as well as it did last year. The only top 4 Dman they still have from 2012 is Kronwall. Ericsson, Smith, Kindl, Dekeyser, Quincey, etc. are competent Dmen but Ericsson himself is an average 2nd pairing guy and the rest leave a whole lot to be desired. I was really surprised they didn't add Bouwmeester last year. I thought that was a match made in heaven.

They've got a whole lot riding on Kindl, Smith and Dekeyser maturing quickly and none of them have a full NHL season under their belts.

Weiss is an upgrade on Filpulla who sucks but the rest of the forwards are getting old and Franzen can't decide if he's Dustin Penner or Jeff Carter. Also Helm's back is (frank)ed, Bertuzzi and Samuelsson always have an injury of some sort, Abdelkader's hands haven't come around like they were supposed to.
