It's like learning "latin" ... then you know you can speak french, spanish, portugese, roman.. you get the drift.

Some of the best web designers I know all have those basis mentionned.

Anyways.. .one thing for sure.. learn language = learn many if you wanna keep your job.

i think it is cute the way you are arguing with a guy who is in the business about what it takes to break into the business.

the bottom line is this...there are thousands upon thousands of self taught programmers out there, and a lot of them are very talented as it is probably one of the most competitive field out there, what will set you apart to an employer will be that little piece of paper that says,"Yeah, I know I didn't need c++, but I took it anyway because I am dedicated to my work." That employer will give you a leg up because he will perceive that you won't mind doing something you might not have to do, but you did it.

Learning it is like learning the rosetta stone... it unlocks the logic needed to understand other languages that are web based.

And the futur of the web is with the smart phones and tablets.. and trust me when I say that if you want to do stuff web related in the near futur.. you need more then CSS, Java and PHP to land a job that will pay you enough to make a decent living.

I learned CSS in a week end... but Im still learning C sharp and C++ ( you better stick with Sharp because it's an evolution of C++).

web design becomes way more complex when you deal with the different platforms and OS. Learning the root will enable you to learn all the new languages that will come and go in your career.

Im not saying master in CSharp... its more like.. .dont do the same mistakes I did.. learn a lesser language and get fuked when new ones come out that are tottaly different.

PHP ? Very good to learn... but most jobs offered aren't the cool web design jobs.
Javascript ? Also very good to learn.. a must ... but it's a very specific language with a specific use. Once again... a Java programing web job cannot be found easily... and the ones that are open ? Well sorry to say... you won't make the cut.. .there's a 15 yo out there that's already light years ahead of you.

CSS ? It's a style... not a language like HTML or C ++ a good HTML programer automatically uses the same CSS logic. Good to know but won't land you a job in web design.

HTML and HTML5 : They say it's the futur... I think it is.. but right now, still limited and weird. You will need to master this if you want to get a job as a web designer. Combine this with some graphic designer courses ( the basics ) and it will certainly help you get a job.. maybe not as a freelancer ( lacking designer skills wil lhurt you) but in a small company.

Now.. the bigger companies ? They want programers that know more languages and can master the basics as well as the new languages that come and go.

Action script is usefull right now... but im not sure where Flash will end up.

Flex is very popular also right now... very usefull if you want to run flash on Apple products. But.. bulky and it's futur is bleak.

Joomla : a great language that's web oriented but also cool for other stuff.
Lua: is freakin awesome... but more software oriented.

thanks for this. one thing though. you seem to dismiss css as if it's nothing. it's so crucial to web design as without it, you have no placement, colors, styles, nothing.

to say it wouldn't get me a job in web design is wrong. css is mandatory for web design.

i'll start off with html, css, javascript and if after that i feel i am limited to poopty jobs because i don't know c++ or some other object oriented language, then i'll learn it.

i respect what you have to say marty, but i just don't believe it's as crucial as you think it is for web design.

take an online class at a university. would be perfect. it would be a good foundation for the basics and might be all you need.

plus it might be cheaper. maybe look into a non-credit course.
