i'll assume it's the latter. you'll need the operating system cd. so, windows xp,vista,7,8 or linux if you want to go that route. though i imagine you're using windows.

if you don't have a cd you can buy one or "find" one online. you might have a product key sticker on the bottom of your laptop. if you do you'd want to find the actual operating system that it corresponds with.

does it last longer than 10 minutes in safe mode? bad sectors has to do with the hard drive so your hdd might be dying. how old is the laptop? is it a common problem with this particular model?

can you reformat it? transfer all your important poop to an external hdd and format it. if that fails you can try buying a new hdd for under 100$ and install it. if the problem is with the battery or other components you are better off just bringing it in to a computer store. (not microbytes)
they will properly diagnose it and tell you if it's salvageable. but first try the things i told you.
google your problem and see it's a fixable thing with that model/brand.

yeah backup anything you'd want to keep and then go for it. try the backup image on the other partition first though. might save you lots of time and searching for the cd.

haven't tried but it usually happens when I open something up like let' say a browser. it will start loading then I get the (not responding) poop and then it just stops. can't ctrl-alt-del or anything to bring up the task manager. only thing I can do is unplug.
