Tortorella (1,547 games as an NHL head coach, 742 head coaching wins, .480 career coaching win percentage) is second all-time among American-born NHL head coaches and ninth among all NHL head coach in league history in coaching wins.
..
and d) Tortorella stays on in Hockey Ops not just for the final year of his current contract but beyond that in support of Sullivan. - bmeltzer

Also 4th among all NHL head coach in league history in coaching losses and, to the surprise of nobody, 12 losses away from being the worst among all NHL head coach in league history in coaching OTL. Have we ever seen anyone as bad at deploying personnel in OT as Torts?
He left Columbus because they wouldn't wouldn't put him in the FO so I have expected the move out of coaching into a permanent role to be the end game from the start. |

Torts should not be extended as a coach. His shelf life is predictable and it will be interesting to see how things work out this year. He tends to peak in his 2nd or 3rd year with organizations, and then things go down hill from there. He is the type of coach that players will tune out eventually. |

All in all last year, some questioned decisions, some benching, player usage questions and some players being upset with the coach it’s hard to say this team did not overachieve expectations. I never thought they would be a bubble team let alone to have to plummet like they did just to miss out but still somehow that team played well as a team better than it’s singled out pieces. Would be interesting to see Sullivan though who is a intriguing coach |

Bill Meltzer: Tortorella to be Team USA Assistant Coach at 4 Nations - bmeltzer
- so RP was let go by the pens for cap reason only? seems odd as signed in philly for what 1.4 per on a 1-year deal. surely they could afford that no? he made 750 with the pens, what would the qualifier have to be? it was more than just $ imo.
- can also see the coaching scenario you laid out. I mentioned that long time ago. so if that did happen then Torts is calling the shots on that, nepotism at its finest.
- I still believe torts wants to continue coaching and would like an ext ( will he push for one?).
- putting him in any type of advisor/management role would not be good. don't see any value he would add in that role. |

Can't believe how bad of a coach Paul Maurice is.
Have we ever seen anyone as bad at deploying personnel in OT as Torts? Trotz and Hitchcock have worse OTL records

He hasn't really done anything as a coach in over 2 decades. Tortorella staying as a significant influence on this franchise long term is a death sentence to this teams chances of becoming a legit cup contender.

They finished 21st in the league up from 26th the previous season. Not much of an upgrade. Would've been better off finishing 26th again.

The NHL loves its retreads. Honestly, what does that have to do with Hextall? Do you see how childish that is? Second of all, Tortorella is a coach and Hextall is a GM. Thirdly and perhaps most importantly. I doubt Hextall is sitting desperately by the phone. He most likely is enjoying his life with the millions of dollars he has earned as a hockey player and hockey executive. Never having to work another day in his life.

LOL. PM has coached 300 more games than Torts, just won the Stanley cup, and still has fewer OT losses but the key to these longevity records is longevity.
I think you meant Trotz and Babcock but Trotz coached 300 more games than Torts for only 12 more losses. Not that i think Torts coaches 300 more games but there's a 50/50 chance he sets the record this year. They had 11 OT losses last year.
Are you defending Torts deployment of personnel in OT? He is terrible. |

I don't keep spread sheets but you should. What I said to you and it was during a discussion on systems and style of play, was that I prefer the more aggressive offensive attack system that Ruff employs, he was with the Devils at the time, over the system and style of play that Tortorella employs. As far as coaches, my preference is for neither as I would like a younger more progressive coach rather than another retread. You can call me out all you like but you need to get it right.

Removing Torts from his current position with the Flyers would be my first move if I was ever calling the shots for the team. |

No defending him at all. He seems to be mentally slow when it comes to OT.
And yes Maurice coached 4 more seasons than Torts. Didn't know that mattered. Just thought you were going by numbers.
Does the OTL number include shoot out loses, I would like to see how much Bob bailed him out in Columbus.

Some are entertaining….some he comes off like a bit of a diick. I do like when he gives some of his in depth answers. |
