Just my opinion, but the Wings and Yzerman are still very much in a building mode. When Yzerman took over in late April of 2019 the organization had just pooched the 2018 draft, having taken Zadina 6th overall, they had nothing in terms of young highend prospects and they had an older roster.
The building process is going to take a long time if you're not building with first overall picks and a plethora of quality draft picks. Seems to be a lot of folks on here expecting way too much in such a short amount of time. Five years for Yzerman is not a long time in terms of NHL years. He hasn't had the luxury of drafting a generational player.
How long did it take Washington to win a cup after drafting OV 1st overall and Backstrom 4th overall? It took 12 years!! Edmonton had, what, five first overall picks since 2010 and they just made a cup final. It's 2024.
Florida drafted Barkov and Ekblad twelve years before they won the cup this year. Landeskog was taken 2nd overall in 2011 and MacKinnon was taken 1st overall in 2013, they finally won a cup nine years after MacKinnon was drafted and he's an upper-echelon player. It takes a long time even with top three picks, which Yzerman hasn't had. |

Yzerman SHOULD be judged on his draft record regardless and outside of the first round its been horrible. Thats partially why the rebuild has taken so long.

Campbell seems that he could not stand up to all the media, fan and team scrutiny in the past few years. I hope he gets it together ad can resume his career. Prayers fo him and his family.

Has it though? Has enough time passed to truly judge those kids yet? The GM is rarely the guy who's taking guys mid to late rounds in the draft, he is however the guy responsible for the group that does make those picks.
The 2019 draft was Yzerman's first draft, he was hired a month before it, roughly, obviously the Wings staff had a list before he got there. Taking Seider with the 6th overall pick was a homerun though. Franchise player.
Looking at 2020, Wallinder is an excellent prospect in my opinion, kid just turned 22 and he's a 6'4" mobile defenseman. His skating is tremendous, but big defensemen need time which the Wings have ALWAYS been about. Looking beyond Niederbach and Hanas, who's made a huge impact at the NHL level from that draft? No one, that's who. Those two are still developing.
2021 - Edvinsson looks like a great pick, another big, smooth-skating defenseman with outstanding puck handling ability, Cossa is a huge goaltender who's still delevoping, they always take more time. Looking into the second round Buium is another big defenseman who's still developing. Clearly they are targeting building a defense, which takes time. Again, look at the draft, no one has made an impact at the NHL level from that draft in the third round or beyond.
Kids from the 2022 and 2023 draft are still developing, just look at hockeydb, there's a lot of zero's from the second round and beyond on both of those. Too early to judge. |

But what I seen of Tuomisto in the preseason, he does not stand out either good or bad. Sometimes not being noticeable on D is a good thing, though.

Yzerman had some absolute steals in Brayden Point and kutcherov. Unfortunately for us, we haven’t had 2nd rounders that absolutely should have been top 5 first rounder picks. Without those two guys, I doubt Tampa wins a single cup. |

The team was planning on carrying 3 last I knew. Ended up saving their bacon last year. Cossa looking better, a solid year in GR would be a great boost |

Since Yzerman came onboard in 2019 not one NHL team has had a steal in the second round and beyond. Not one!! People just have to look at the draft on hockeydb to see that. It's been slim-pickin's out there.
The Wings have definitely had their fair share of luck or whatever you wanna call it in that regard though, just look at the 1989 draft, four of the top eleven scorers from that draft were taken by the Red Wings, including getting Lidstrom and Fedorov in the third and fourth rounds. In a re-draft they'd go top three OA. Same deal with Datsyuk and Zetterberg.
If a Wings fan was born between 1980-1985, by the time they were 10 or 15 years old, in 1995, the Wings were in the cup finals. They were good for over 20 years, all you've ever known is for them to be great. Unfortunately those times come to an end, here we are. |

Yzerman inherited both Stamkos and Hedman as they were from the 2008 & 2009 drafts, he was hired in May of 2010. But the Lightning did a tremendous job of scouting and drafting under Yzerman over the next 6 or 7 years. Darryl Plandowski had a lot to do with that, he's also doing an awesome job for the Coyotes/Utah. Look out for them in the next three or so years. |

What a shot by Kasper, nice goal. |

Kasper has played his way on to this team, he has been the best player throughout the preseason. It’s time for Yzerman to waive Holl and Copp both will probably make it through waivers and if taken we lose a bad contract. Kasper and Watson are better options on the 23 man roster |

Kasper yes, but hate to see him get 4th line minutes on Detroit when he can get 1st in minutes in GR. |

Detroit needs a guy with some grit and Kasper should be given a chance on the second line or worse case third line. It would be a waste for him on fourth line. But I agree with you Lalonde doesn’t have the smarts to try him with Kane and Tarasanko and would play him on fourth line |
