So. Quick question.
Keep an extra $800K guy who can play basically anywhere, C and wing, in the bottom six or keep a $1.18 million guy who’s a very good, but essentially only a 4th line LW who needs to recover from injury and is no longer truly needed due to a recent pickup?

They both suck at it, but Dewar has more centre experience than Holmberg. Last year Holmberg took 203 faceoffs in 54 games. Dewar had over 500 faceoffs when he was 23 and over 400 when he was 24. The year he was traded to Toronto he had just under 300 in 57 games. Holmberg was at 46.3% last year and Dewar was at 46.9% the year he was traded.
So the choice isn't really, "Who can play centre?". Last year Dewar was a drastically better penalty killer than Holmberg. In terms of age they are both 25 years old and Holmberg is actually 100 days older.

Can someone help me understand why the mainstream media in Toronto is peddling the false narrative that Marner will get a better deal on the open market than a 12.5M x 8 years ($100M contract) with the Leafs? |

Marners value should depend on Rantanen salary.
Rantanen is a better winger all day - so it’ll be or should be less.
Edit: I do agree with the guy that says a team will pay him 12.5 - GMs go nuts sometimes eh |

I'm not sure. Right now - you have
MacKinnon making $12.6m in the 2nd year of his deal;
Matthews making $13.25m in the 1st year of his deal;
McDavid making $12.5m in the 7th year of his deal;
Draisaitl a year away from making $14m
Those are the only players making more than $12.5m and each of them have won a Hart trophy in the last 5 years. I like Marner but he's never received better than a 4th place vote in Hart voting by contrast. He is presently overpaid which puts him in this conversation, but he shouldn't BE in the conversation for a salary that high.
He's an excellent player - but he should probably have Willy's $11.5m at most (and that would even be high) and Willy should have Marner's present $10.9m at most.

I agree with the premise here, but only because of the hard cap. The salary cap is a lousy current reality which leads to many players being underpaid and some overpaid. For example, JT is a useful player, but relative to Marner's production, he is overpaid. The ghost of Zack Parise and Ryan Suter will cost the Minnesota Wild over $14M in cap space this season, that's probably the worst overpayment in the league. McDavid, MacKinnon and Matthews in a cap league, will likely always be underpaid. The trick in this false economy is not to have too many overpaid players that produce very little.

It should but it wont.
Just like nylanders didnt depend on anyone else's, hence why he got overpaid and why marner will get overpaid.
Its Toronto....stars all get overpaid |

Oh i agree. Im not saying marner is worth 12.5m....hes not. I agree i wouldn't pay him more than what Willy got......and Willy isnt worth 11.5
But here we are. |
