Looks like Lyon is the starter again until he burns out in 30 or 40 games. Liked Kasper in the game and the Seider/Edvinsson pairing looked good. What i don't get is Gustafsson playing over Holl or Johansson. Even Maatta has looked shaky so far this season fumbling the puck a lot.
You can't have a team allow 35 to 40 shots a game and expect to win a lot of them. They allowed 80 shots in two games to Nashville. Teams with good offensive weapons will light up the Wings with that many shots. |

to be fair, in 2 of the 3 losses Detroit outshot the opposition (32-28 vs. Pitt and also 32-28 first game vs. NYR, outshot 34-31 by NYR in 2nd meeting). Lyon hasn’t had a chance to be the “starting” goalie, I don’t know that he’ll burnout if he splits the load even close to 50/50. For Gus, all I can think is power play. He looked more stable, but Holl should be out there at this point (or Johansson or both). So, the two games against Nashville are the only games they gave up 35+ shots and those are the two they won. To Nashville’s credit, they are taking shots from everywhere and trying to feed Stamkos. It’s a long season to go for sure. |

Lyon was the starter last season and he eventually burned out in the 2nd half of the season where his numbers dropped.
As for Gus, i haven't seen him do anything good on the PP. I've seen him make horrible passes that were intercepted and cleared a bunch of times and he's worst than Ghost, Holl, Petry and everyone else in the defensive zone. Wings are stuck with this guy for another year to boot. Seider is way better on the PP at moving the puck, walking the line and keeping the pucks in. My only issue with Seider on the PP is his reluctance to shoot probably because he feels Debrincat, Raymond, Kane or Larkin should be shooting and not him. Would much rather see Edvinsson get some PP time over Gus. |

Lyon came in after Husso went down. He was essentially credited with giving Detroit a huge boost. I thought Gus looked good on the advantage. Again, the staff are the ones putting him in, not me. I’d love to see Edvinsson on the power play, I think we will. I agree on Seider. He ends up missing lanes and getting blocks so he defers. Last game when he came flying in it was a beautiful shot. Back to the original point, Lyon was riding pine and Husso got start after start until he couldn’t and the team got better with Lyon. |

Husso only played 19 games last season and one or two of those were after his first injury. He came back and got injured again right away. They also gave Reimer some starts early on. If i remember correctly they started with mainly Husso then Reimer for a bit and eventually had no choice but to go with Lyon as the starter who was playing best of the 3. Later in the season Lyon started to fade and his numbers dipped for a while until the last 10 games or so of the season.
As for Gus, i actually wanted the Wings to sign him in 2020-21 but they didn't. Now though i wouldn't have signed him...especially not for 2 years. He's just a worst version of Ghost at this point and i feel they could get similar results from young guys like Edvinsson and Johansson that can actually improve with the increased responsibility. |

I agree on Gus, my point was that Lyon wasn’t put in as the starter. Him jumping in (and playing the most NHL games of his career) after being 3rd in line was a big part of the turn around. I was impressed with his attitude and he seemed to bring new energy to to team. there were multiple things going on. Not to go deep into it, Larkin lost a child and the team seemed to all feel what was going on. Kane fell off at one point. Raymond came up big at the end and I hope he hits that stride soon. Great speed and vision. Looking forward Cossa and Augustine look like they could be something special and solid in net. Time to start ditching the plugs. |

No he wasn't the starter to start the season but he became the starter when he showed he was the best option...heck maybe the Wings would have made the playoffs if Fester had went to him quicker than he did considering 1 more point and they would have made the playoffs. So far he is proving to be the best option again. We'll see if Fester learned anything from last season or is he going to make the same mistake again.
So far this season it almost feels like there are a lot of players that don't care much or are acting like this is still pre-season. Chiarot made some comments about some of the offensive guys needing to buy into the system and that it takes time but the only new top 6 forward they have this season is Tarasenko and the vast majority of the team was here last year. Their defensive system looks exactly like it has the last few years since Fester took over so i don't know what he is talking about buying in unless he means players are tuning out the coach and if that is the case then he needs to be fired along with all the assistants and bring in an entire new staff. |

I give you full marks on the team. There are guys that look like they don’t care if they’re not scoring. I think Kasper being hungry is an important add. Something needs to wake up some of this team. I thought Kane would come out of the gate hot but man he looks like he’s struggling at times. Larkin and Tarasenko skate hard, I’ll include Raymond. I give credit to Edvinsson for standing out but there are so many holes. |

This has been a struggle. Struggle to adapt. Struggle to field a viable. Struggle waiting to win. Last year was a hint of what might be. The complete tear down, leadership change, new arena....it's been rough. Draft choices are being grown, groomed, assessed. We, as afan-base, are expectant and for me (probably many fans) spoiled; 25 years after a seeming eternity of losing.
Last year, Lalonde made some comments about OTT standing up after Perron reacted (very selfishly and stupidly) to Larking being wrecked. I said it felt like Lalonde was losing the room. As I watch this year, it feels errily the same as last; team D absent, continuity lacking, etc... Some of it is the quality of players, but they're seemingly better players on paper. Something's off. Lalonde talked about how yelling doesn't have the impact it once did. That's a tell, to me: Yelling has been a default move for coaches these guys have had in the past and it's jaded them. But sometimes a leader is forced to unload, it shows passion, drive, belief that their team is stronger than they're showing. Most of these guys seem like they're going through the motions. Something has to give. These guys CAN win, we've seen it. It's there.
Kasper needs to stay. He's a spark desperately missing from this team. Gus needs help, he's WAY better than he's showing....or waive him if he's not. Holl needs to play (*checks notes*), NEVER thought I'd say that. Johansson's steady, reliable. There's some good on this team. 1 point. 1 stinkin' point. We can secure that point now and turn the page.
This. Is. A. Good. Team.
They need a better leader......read into that what you will. |

Define "good." The defense are weak compared to an average playoff team. |

Ok, that's a fair point. Oh,good morning!
Good: Gus & Holl, have shown competency...Holl's a completelt different defender than last year, Gus has shown flashes of ability. Maatta's "Ole Reliable", knows he's not a Norris candidate but he's also going to be where he needs to be...most of the time, and he'll chip in double-digit points. They're bottom 2 guys, all of them.
Eddy & Mo are, humble opinion, studs. Every pod I've listed to attest to this... they defend and disrupt routinely and will score like beasts. They're studs. Johansson's going to be a strong dude...not Norris, but he's going to be a defender who can/will control play.
Petry, Holl, Gus.....they're not what we need by any stretch. Deployed properly, they fill a void. No, they're not going to be the reason we make the SCPO, nor are they long-term solutions....hence the short (and vomit-inducing) contracts.
Does that make more sense, JF? |

I just have to say that when the schedule came out, everyone agreed it was a brutal start to the season. They had to play a loaded and retooled Nashville team twice, and twice play a NYR team that’s arguably the most talented team in the NHL, who also happens to have the best goalie in the world. Pittsburgh came off a game where they were thoroughly embarrassed and they came out angry. That was a tough way to start the year with eight new players and they pulled out four of ten points.
They’re barely a week into the season and guys are already calling for trades, the coach to be fired and waiving players. Teams evaluate in 8 game increments so at least give them three more before we call for blowing up the program. |

I think that's a fair assessment but one good top pairing combined with a bunch of bottom pairing dmen is a weak defense compared to most playoff teams. Detroit will struggle until that defense improves. It puts a ton of pressure on the forwards and goalie to compensate. |

Does anyone have a link to the post game interview with Alex Lyons saying that he’s the knob king? I need to forward that to my son. That was freaking hilarious.
Petry and Holl have played surprisingly well. Gus … not looking good. Once Kane catches fire I think the wings are gonna start winning more games. |
