While not ideal in all aspects (is it ever? No), I'm extremely pleased that the Preds signed RFA's Carrier and Glass. The money and terms are fine at 1-yr for Carrier. It gives him the opportunity to bounce back from last year which was tough for all the Preds. He's younger and he's fast. Good signing.
Glass on a 2-yr is even better as he'll still be an RFA at the end of the new contract. Outstanding move. The upside is there for Cody Glass and I feel he's going to continue getting better and will prove to be a significant asset for the Preds.
Duchene signed for 1-yr x $3M at Dallas vs the $9M plus the limited NTC that would have kicked in yesterday had the Preds not given him the boot. That rather skimpy contract with the Stars was the best Duchene could get for a reason - it speaks volumes about how the other 31 NHL teams value the player.
Trotz/Poile could not deal Duchene before the deadline. Retained salary wouldn't even budge the interest meter from other teams. The org wanted him gone and I applaud them for getting the job done and saving a lot of cash in the process too. I liked Duchene to a limited degree but I'm glad he's gone. Great move.
Bryan Bastin over on OtF has an excellent analysis on the two RFA signings along with the UFA signings that might shed more light on the abilities of the players, what to expect and the reasoning behind it.

If you haven't read that analysis, doing so might shed a different light on what's transpired.
No one can predict the future but I also don't discount Trotz's comments about any of the signings either - there is thought and a plan behind the moves.
Get rid of Forsberg? Right...
