AI is going to first take many jobs from the information sector bc it is more efficient.
Machine learning and thinking can never be fully capable of ubderstanding and translating even if it is a language model of what it is to be. It can use ideas and create models through intersection. It can do a lot. It is still just a mimic. It's mimic is a translation of ideas. Ideas though have organic origins. There are expressions of sentience that cannot be mimicked. Pain and empathy cannot simply be learned through the filter from an organic source and the translated as idea vectors and properly mimicked. To compute all aspects of being would require omniscient understanding.
Take Elvis singing baby got back for example. It's done to the tune of a heartless fool. While it is convincing it is limited. The intpretation of the human would likely process those lyrics and ideas into that musical manner in a far different manner. As the original itself used deep bass and it's deeper meaning was steadfastly making a statement about an identity and being defiant of a larger culture's judgement on that identity.
Could this be mimicked by a language computation no. Just as a room full of monkeys pounding on typewriters for infinity couldnt happen on a combination creating shakespeare. Bc free will is the requirement of sentience it would not be pissible to model it anymore than sociopaths can fully mimick empathetic action. |

I agree that there’s a lot of jumble, but don’t miss one of the odd points in the hyper link. The associated press has been using AI for the past few years for sport reviews and other articles. Those releases are the basis for a lot of other outlets. Now they’ve signed a formal contract with the company. With actors having sold their faces and voices to studios already “deep fake” and AI written scripts are already in circulation. I did a write up on an online pub that started posting full AI articles during the strike. They hire a manager to double check, but the fact that they’ve been doing it so long puts the writers in a bad space. I watched a show use Chat GPT to write a Seinfeld episode and had voice actors play it out. It was pretty good. Just need a couple tweaks. And it took 10 minutes. AI is plugged into virtually every major database but has the 2021 limiter still. That will be removed. A single moderator able to put out 500 articles per week is a lot of $ back in the studio’s pocket. That’s why actors and writers have both asked for AI elimination and/or moderation in the new deal. It’s already implemented |

Great piece. I had no idea that the AP was already doing that.
AI makes sense for game recaps because it's essentially just a rundown of facts. I think we're still miles away from any kind of sports analysis or "opinion" from AI because it requires an understanding of facts along with prognostication and a unique "voice" that I'm not sure AI can replicate in the near term.
I also think language and the humanities at large are an integral part of the human experience; this whole concept is troubling to me. Not to get too deep, but if AI can better replicate human content than humans, it could create a sort of existential cultural crisis |

Ok, ok, ok…..SO; how do we know this was even written by a “Jeremy Laura”?!?!?!?!
Reading this, and the posts above, really opens my eyes to how dangerous this could be. Not only from a computer perspective, but from the human perspective: People lose jobs, homes, etc…. Pretty intimidating to think that profit would drive companies to eliminate people in favour of a computer. This is wild. |

despite the constant gloom I don't really see much of a downside.
good reporters will still have work ... maybe even get paid more |

I don't buy the "cover up" narrative. Journalism is a business that caters to it's audience, if you don't like Fox then watch NewsMax or CNBC or whatever .. there's SOOOO many choices. |

I have a lot of hope for what AI can do. I'm already using it to write queries and analyze vast amounts of data. One of the first groups I hope AI puts out of business are these ridiculous "fact check" sites. It's to the point where if you're looking for content on current events, all you see is page after page of "fact check" sites that are either trying to validate or disprove the story. I was helping my nephew write a paper on natural immunity and found numerous fact checks stating that immune systems are right-wing conspiracy theories. It's insanity.
The downside of AI is it can and will be controlled. tyrants will always try to control the flow of information and we're already seeing examples in Chat GPT where political influence is obvious. Prompt Engineers / AI librarians will be the people who control AI responses to commonly asked questions and it's the one field that can determine if AI responses are fact based, or if they are filtered. |

AI is like anything else tech wise. The more a particular version gets used, the more it sounds like the editor wants. You can already type in “write in the style of a script writer or journalist. It scans examples (or has already) and uses those traits”. Even the last NHL 23 had the announcers mention how many goals, how long a career, how many points etc for the players involved. Fascinating, but intimidating as well |

I think beyond “covering it up”, a lot of these newsrooms are firing staff left and right. For the past decade even local news channels are reading talking points written by the national editor. For instance, if you go to a CBS or FOX affiliate, the local news will have national takes and they all have the same talking points, down to the words used. You can find compilations on Youtube and it’s bizarre to see.
As far as the firings go, it could well become like local sports where you just a couple local workers but most of the broadcast is shared. Detroit did that with sports radio about a decade ago. At one point, 97.1 didn’t have local sports talk. They would just stream a national property. The reporters on many shows just read the teleprompter and many will quote the Associated Press. That’s who made this agreement and who nearly every organization looks to. The fact that it’s during a writer’s strike makes it even more surprising |

That was one of the ironic points of Fahrenheit 451. When a book has been printed, you can compare examples and see what has been changed. If everything is digital, it can be edited at a whim. This was written in 1953. It almost became a how to guide. People would do everything through screens (phone calls, news, et) and they would be on all the time. And the screens would have the ability to “watch” the viewer. We know computer and phone cameras can be hacked and France has even passed a bill making it legal to activate the camera of a suspected criminal on any known devices |

I know about Sinclair .. not every station is owned by them and TV isn't the only source for news anymore

Just type in how many news outlets were close in the past few months. Then go to that article and see how much the associated press is using AI already. The AP is used by nearly every news organization (or referenced) and they’ve been releasing AI content for a while now. They’ve now signed a deal with an AI provider. Online journos are reporting revenue from youtube and websites being down 70-80 percent. Now that the writers are on strike past week three, force Majeure has now kicked in and studios can replace and cancel projects. It’s already being used by major platforms but to have the Associated Press make it public during the strike is bad news for the writers. |

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way businesses operate by making processes faster, more efficient, and more customer-centric. And I recently found a reliable roof ai chatbot that has really changed the way we work. This roofing AI chatbot has optimized the customer experience by handling inquiries, providing instant quotes, and scheduling appointments through our website. The efficiency it provides allows us to serve more customers with less manual labor, increasing responsiveness and customer satisfaction. If you are in the roofing industry or any other service-based business, I highly recommend exploring similar artificial intelligence-based solutions. |
