Thought I read somewhere that Lou said Tsyplakov wasn’t signed to play in the minors. Maybe Lou is still working the phones?

Signed a one way entry level contract which means he gets the same amount of money if he plays in Bridgeport or in The NHL. I don't think there was a supplemental clause in the deal guaranteeing him an NHL Roster Spot.
Did you read where this was in fact a guarantee in the contract?

Maxim Tsyplakov was considered the top European free agent, signed with the Islanders on May 16, agreeing to a one-year entry-level contract. It appears as if he has every opportunity to make the NHL roster, as Lamoriello stated today that he did not sign Tsyplakov to play in Bridgeport.

Getting the kid signed over other teams was a big deal for sure.
Obviously Lou wants him to make the big club and succeed but there is no guarantee that that is where he will play. The $ is guaranteed no matter if he plays in the NHL or AHL.
Hope he comes here and gets a job on the big club. If he does, him and Duclair in the line up gives the top six a lot different look and Roy options.

He did. I understand the thought process behind starting him in the AHL and it's a fair argument to make but, as long as he doesn't look completely awful in camp/preseason, I don't see why they can't give him a handful of games in the NHL to see how he fares. The other guys are known quantities and none of them are dynamic or particularly irreplaceable.

It's unlikely he's going to be significantly better than any of them and entirely possible he stinks and goes back to the KHL...but I'd rather see how he looks than just lose him when he gets sent to Bridgeport and bolts back to Russia...unless of course they have spoken to him and he's willing to start out there.

And thinking bigger-picturing regarding it...it would be nice to not send the message to all other potential European UFA's that when we sign you and say you're going to be an NHL player it doesn't mean that you'll be buried in the minors. I don't think the Isles should put themselves in a position to jeopardize the chance of signing any future assets that cost them nothing.

So wait the Islanders should put him on their opening day roster even if he sucks so that future Europeans don't black ball the Islanders? Really? That's absurd.
Hopefully he comes over and "EARNS" a starting position on the team and all the speculation if he would or wouldn't report to Bridgeport stays on the internet.
If he's ready for the dance he will get his chance. If not he has a decision to make.

I think the team will give him every opportunity to make the big club. However, I do not think they will place him on the team just prove to potential free agents, you can sign here no matter what. I am hoping that his transition is a smooth one, but you cannot argue that it is not a different style of play.

Also, if he gets a little butt hurt being sent down to Bridgeport for whatever the reason and he wants to go home to mommy. Then maybe he is not the guy for this team. He is waiver exempt. Others are not. You have to do what is best for the whole team not just one player.

I just don’t see a spot for Wahlstrom on the isles. I think it’s time Lou cuts bait and lets the kid have a shot elsewhere to maybe put up some pts and make some money.
- kindlyrick

There was just a bit of sarcasm laced into that one. With that I don’t mind if he gives the kid another shot. What do we have to lose? This upcoming season is going to be more then likely a mirror image of last. Not losing to much sleep either way.

When I originally read the comment from Lou, I took it as a tongue in cheek, in the arrogant way as he likes to project himself many times. “Well we didn’t sign him to play in the AHL.”

I'm not saying he should just be handed a spot in the starting lineup right out of the gate. He obviously needs to show in camp and preseason that he can hang with the NHL club and not be a liability. And who knows, maybe they've spoken and he is OK with getting his feet under him for a month in Bridgeport and that'd be great.

But I just don't think that Hudson Fasching is so vital to the lineup that he can't sit for a few games at some point very early in the season to see what this guy has. I'd just rather they get a look at Tsyplakov and make a decision from there. Fasching is a 29yo pending UFA who they probably won't re-sign after this year. Not finding out what they have in a 25yo highly sought-after UFA so someone like Fasching could get minutes would be a head-scratcher to me. I'm not saying Tsyplakov needs to have a guaranteed lineup spot for 41 straight games, just that giving him 3 or 4 games in the first 10-15 to see how he handles it would be worth it to me. And, to reiterate, all of this is assuming he has a good camp and earns it by working hard.

Listen I don't think it's unfair to feel the opposite that I do on this one, it's a perfectly reasonable argument. I just don't think someone like Fasching has such a lockdown on their spot that they can't get a few games off early in the year to see what this guy can do. Obviously if he shows up out of shape, dogs it in camp, just flat-out isn't good enough in camp/preseason, etc... then no...he shouldn't get anything without earning it in the AHL first.

Agreed. This is what I think the club will do. Unless he’s got a garbage camp he’ll be in the lineup to see how he does with the NHL game. Now if he has a bad camp all bets are off but I’m sure they’ll give him a bit of a leash to see what he’s got. These kinds of players rarely see instant success. Especially for us.

That is an understatement. I cannot remember a player that this team has signed like this working out at all. Most have had a ton of potential but just could not adapt their success to the NHL level. It would be a bonus if this kid could be the first. It would take some pressure off the team.

Yep. It’s a low risk move. I like it but I have no expectations this guy will be a long term contributor to the teams success. I hope he is but if he’s not it’s easy to cut ties and move on. Maybe we get lucky this time.

What's the deal with Iskhakov? Haven't heard much around here about him. Is he sticking around or heading back to Russia? Showed some promise in his limited minutes at the end of last season I thought.

I had some interest also, but chances are he wasn't going to pan out. With his size, he needed to be a pretty highly skilled guy to stick. Maybe he can come back at some point after developing some more but I'm not betting on it.

I found it a little odd that he spent so much time during his development playing away from Russia just to ultimately return their after finally getting to the NHL. He had an odd career path. NCAA --> Liiga (Finland) --> DEL (Germany) --> AHL

There will be lots of interesting storylines to watch over the next 12 months.

Trade deadline could be lucrative if they're outside the playoff picture and decide to trade Nelson, Palmieri, and Reilly. Potentially Pageau too.

Next offseason will probably be pretty indicative of what the future is for this team. Departures of Nelson and Palmieri would free up $11M in cap space alone and presumably leave them with one or more extra 1st round picks on top of their own. It would inject a lot of talent into the pipeline and probably result in a step back the following year on the ice.

Some Minor Rule Changes
Dan Rosen of NHL.com (mailbag):

Several minor rule changes have been approved by the NHL for the 2024-25 season. Now, sadly for some, there will be no extension of overtime yet. After all, almost 70% of overtime games end in overtime. That is progress.

The big rule might just be challenging the puck over the glass penalty. Coaches will have the opportunity to get such infractions overturned. However, there carries a risk. An unsuccessful challenge results in an extra two minute penalty on top of the original minor. Talk about a disadvantage.

Other rule changes include not giving defenders a break when a goaltender knocks off the pegs accidentally, warning offensive centers only one time for a face-off violation, and no sitting on the dasher boards waiting for a change on the fly. A first offense is a warning. A second is a minor penalty.
