I disagree. When JD has been healthy he has been impressive. The problem is even when he came back from the shoulder injury last season, he still had a core issue he was dealing with and he tried to play through it which is extremely difficult to do. I think JD needs to do what Sanheim did last year, and that is commit himself to getting stronger this off season. My understanding from Bill and Jason is JD has been around Vorhies the entire off season, so that is a very good sign. - jd250
Well said I completely agree, just don't want him getting to much size where it takes away from his speed

Sounds like there are a lotta wanna be San Jose Sharks fans on here. So, let's get this straight? They may be really good in 5 years? Maybe!! Meanwhile, they will be playing to an empty building this year and losing money. I'm sure there are lots of spaces on their bandwagon for those interested! |

Honestly, the whole "lose money" rhetoric is a cliche used by people who don't do their research. The most common way to lose money is to cap out your team and be bad. Maximum expense with least income, such as the Flyers.
Gate receipt impact on actual rebuilding teams is overstated and while receipts will be less, a simple google search shows that the teams which are rebuilding have rinks which while they aren't full, are far from empty and while income will be somewhat less, player expenses are much much less resulting in a net income.
Many of the "common sense" cliches are promoted by the teams that don't want to do the smart thing. |

They played to horrible attendance the past couple of years if I'm not mistaken? And their fans most likely have to wait 5 more years to be true contenders? I was just throwing the money angle out there for $hits and giggles. The fact is that they have been a horrid team for a few years now and will have no hope of winning for most likely at least 5 more years, and even then nothing will be guaranteed. This is what the masses on here want? |

I will do my research. 😉 I just don't have time right now and I am not sure the information for all teams is available publicly. It's been on my mind.
It requires a comprehensive analysis. I simply don't buy the 'we are too stupid/obstinate to engage in a tank style rebuild even when it benefits us economically and in hockey terms.' That is bs. |

Comcast makes their money by not having to pay for programming in the Flyers time slot. They are not a hockey company, they have no vested interest in the outcome of the season other than filling time slots. They are a multinational entertainment company that makes billions on cable programming. As long as people are tuning in, what do they care about a roadmap to the Stanley Cup?
Just saying, why should they care?

I believe they think they already have a bunch of decent prospects/young players in the lineup, to build around. In their opinion there was no reason to rebuild. They were already at a point were by the rebuild was not needed. Their plan is to build and add to the young core group. They want to keep around a strong veteran presence to teach and lead. The brand and the culture is just as important to them moving forward as is adding high end talent. ‘THE PHILADELPHIA FLYERS WILL ALWAYS TRY TO WIN”.
If the question is would Comcast ever agree to an actual rebuild were by it first is torn down? I don’t think they would….there is always a snake oil salesman type to show them a different path….one that includes no massive drop in revenues. After all we are talking about a corporation….corporations do not set out with a plan to lose money with only a CHANCE to make it in the future.

From 97-98 through 2018-19, the Sharks missed the playoffs only twice. And while this coming year will be six in a without playoffs, they are in a much better position to build a contender than the Flyers.
The Flyers, OTOH, have missed the playoffs 4 years running (soon to be 5) and they’ve only made the playoffs 4 times since 2012.
So, not only are the Sharks closer to Cup contention than the Flyers, they’ve also been the better team overall for the last 20 or so years.

Sharks have added a potential 1st and 2nd line center, a top pair dman, and starting goalie. Not a bad piece of business in the last few months.
I am thinking maybe there is a deal between them and the flyers to send ND to protect all those assets. ND and a 3rd for 2028 1st? He would be invaluable for the sharks. |

What did those years get the Sharks? The Flyers went to the Finals in 1997 and 2010 in that timeframe. They also went to the Conference Finals in 2000, 2004 and 2008. They should have won Cups in 2000 and 2010. The Sharks only made the Finals once and never won a Cup. They have now missed 6 straight years and that will continue for the next few seasons most likely. They were basically an AHL team last year with an abominable goal differential. Gave up 10 goals in back to back games. It appears that the Flyers way can work just as well. Either way you need some breaks and luck along the way. They are choosing to rebuild on the fly. Tanking is not the Flyers way and never will be. If you hate it there are 31 other teams to root for. I mean, people know these facts, so what gives? And yes, the last 12 years have been a disgrace in Flyers land, but that isn't because of their philosophy as much as it is an ode to their incompetent management. |

There you go again anointing them the next Gretzky, Messier, Coffey and Fuhr. Let's slow our roll on giving them the Hart, Selke, Norris and Vezina trophies that you so clearly stated they would win in your post.

This is true, and you can see somewhat why they think that, but the path to high end talent is just unknown, you would think DB knows who will be available FA, or what teams might need to trade (window closing) and want a haul back. Just seems to be throwing a dart while wearing a blind fold. But the full rebuild, with not knowing if there is a generational talent, has its own risk and timeline. |

How do you know the Flyers didn't get equal value? Cutter was a 5th overall pick and Drysdale was a 6th overall pick. The problem obviously is the fact that Drysdale can't stay on the ice. This deal isn't done either way yet. Perhaps Cutter isn't as advertised, and Drysdale gets over his injury woes and succeeds. I mean, he is only 22 which is quite young for a defenseman. He has to stay healthy or it's quite obvious that this deal is gonna end badly for the Flyguys. - Phillywhiteout
Both deals are still based on projections. I feel Cutter's projection is higher than Drysdale, who is also 3 years older. Plus what you said in the bolded area. I feel, at best, he is going to be a 75% player if we are lucky.... |

Just saying, why should they care? - Flyers_01
Thing is, (Comcast ) Spectacor runs Flyers, not Comcast Corporation. The former will care because in their part of the company, the Flyers (and XFinity center) are the biggest component. The pay and reputation of Hilferty and the management team no doubt is correlated with the revenue and reputation of Flyers.
You corrected a misconception of mine a couple of weeks ago, and proved that it is in the economic interest of Flyers to tank. Revenue saved from player salaries likely exceeds tix sale revenue lost. So, why don't they embark on a tank process if everyone largely agrees it is the best way to contend and it is also profitable? Well, local TV revenues could be part of it, esp for Comcast. There are synergies with Xfinity center revenues. Brand damage could be another. Much of national TV deal value could hinge on teams with large fanbases staying competitive/drawing viewership. Else, the next deal is much lower.
Without further data I honestly don't know. But it is not as clear cut as I thought it was before your correction. 🤷

Why don't they have hope for the future? They have the potential for a better future more than the Flyers do. Wait 5 more years? Yea, that's what a rebuild takes if not longer. As a Flyers fan, you've been waiting 14 years now. Going to have to wait a lot longer. |

It is definitely due to incompetence but a big part of that is their philosophy. This franchise is doomed until they change that philosophy. You're wrong about that.

Including yourself apparently.
The Sharks will be a better team than the Flyers in 5 years. It is likely they will add another potential elite player to their roster in this years draft. meanwhile the Flyers will be capped out.
I don't need a crystal ball to read the paths of each of these franchises. One is going to draft elite players and the other is going to overpay aging veterans.
