Well, I thought it would be fun to watch. That first period was brutal regardless of which side you were rooting for. Ultimately, defensive breakdowns and some bad decisions gave DET the win. Nicely done. Hopefully the next meeting is more competitive.

From what I could hear, there was solid pressure from CHI in the 2nd and 3rd that kept Detroit hemmed in at times. Ken Kal/Paul Woods said that ownership in Chicago wanted to expedite the rebuild by bringing players in to supplement the development. Sounded like it was a fun watch!

Been a few posts since I joined in because, well.......because we're doing the same thing over and over: Get out-shot, rely on the 1st line to score, hope Mo & Eddy can keep every opposing player out of our D zone......lather, rinse, repeat. Unsustainable. Interesting read from the TNT guys last night about how some teams are taking an abridged trip to re-build, and "the boogie man" referencing Q being out there, insinuating the OTT, DRW, and BUF may be a viable destination...

Listen, I understand that this rebuild is a bit different than others; we've torn down the entire building right to the sewer lines. It's laborious and methodical. It takes time. But with the talent this team has (exceptions, I got it) and the right staff or scheme, this team could be pushing harder. Relying on the 3d oldest G in the NHL is not a sustainable business model. There's no doubt there are discussions about longevity of some players & coaches. Something has to give...........soon.

Glad we won, no doubt. Larking & the 1st line is carrying this team, happy to see Joey V get on the board, but there's a HUGE scoring vacuum. I saw several times where a shot could've been taken vs a pass made - I know we see different angles on TV - but the snake-bit feel on the2d - 4th lines is palpable.

Time to take off the kid gloves and either sell out, or give this team the tools it needs to make growth a more viable event. The thing that kills me is this is a GOOD team, not the best - lots of gaps - but this team can play. Bergy, Kasper, Eddy, Johansson, etc... need to break out. When that happens, and it happens in a dedicated scheme......yeah, heads are going to turn. I keep watching each game to see if that game's the turning point.

C'mon, lads. Step it up........I KNOW the capability is in there.......

I'm going to repeat something I said a few threads ago. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for Detroit to give up young assets to get a stop-gap goalie. Their mid-level veterans have no to little trade value and 2/3 of the league would love to get a world-class goalie, but where would they find one and at what cost? The true turn-around doesn't begin until Cossa and/or Augustine are ready to go and establish themselves as elite goalies. They are the backbone of this rebuild and there are no trades that can be made that will change that.

If EDM or Toronto had world-class goalies, they win multiple cups. Detroit doesn't have, nor will they ever get (in this era) a Matthews or McDavid. They will not have a top 10, or even top 20 point producers, so they have to build a very solid team with a number of 50 to 80 point players, solid D and most importantly, a top-notch goalie. Until they get that goalie, they are not ready to compete. They can trade for as many 30 something veterans, and as many mid-level goalies as they want, but it will not change anything. The rebuild started when Cossa was drafted and he is the key, whether we like it or not.

The second and third periods were more entertaining to watch. The first period was a head scratcher.

In pregame, Wayne Gretzky made a comment to Anson Carter that he wasn’t a fan of Michigan State. Anyone know any context to this? I grew up in East Lansing, and went to grad school at msu.

Larkin and Debrincat are playing elite. I’m hoping they have just been warming up, because the chemistry is freaking there!

Kasper has been playing awesome. It has shocked me that he can do it all. He loves to drive the net, and this could be huge for Detroit. Remember how Peter forsberg would drive the net? I mean, he is a generational player, I can’t think of anyone to compare him too, but I love to see players try.

Did you guys watch the exchange of Bedard and Seider after Bedard speared him on the side of his face? It’s funny. See if you can find it. Scary moment.

The Hawks actually had some good zone time, but they tend to get knocked off pucks pretty easily.

Once they lucked into Bedard, that immediately moved the schedule up. As much as KD may want to build the entire team through the draft, it's not really a great idea to wait until all these kids make it to the big show. You need to get them competitive rather quickly, so the kids have some sort of structure to step into. Making a bunch of kids who are trying to figure out how to play in the NHL also establish a winning culture is shortsighted in my eyes.

You make a good point. Look at Buffalo... got a crap ton of young talent. But still haven't found a way to win with any kind of consistency. Some teams have found ways to quickly rebuild without building the entire team through the draft. I think of Vegas, NY Rangers, Florida Panthers, etc... Detroit's problem over the years with the draft is not hitting on any superstars... makes it a LOT harder. I think their highest pick in the last 20 years was #4 overall.

Vegas was an expansion team so entirely irrelevant to compare to anyone else except Seattle.
NYR had Trouba, Fox, and Panarin all force their way to the organization and not want to play for anyone else. Detroit already got fortunate with DeBrincat going there. Rare for players to do that in most markets and NYR are uniquely desirable all the time.
Florida drafted Barkov #2 overall and Ekblad #1 overall during their rebuild back to back and then did an excellent job adding to those two outside the draft.
