Honestly, you could probably count on one hand how many prospects this org has that have a legit shot at even a mediocre NHL career.

And no, I don't think the Leafs prospect cupboards are necessarily more barren than the majority of other clubs.

During the Shanahan era we've been giving the Leafs - or at least told to give the Leafs credit - for starting to use more modern and advanced techniques to recognize talent and grow talent, including establishing more and better development programs. It's not entirely fair given that you can't entirely evaluate the years 2020 onwards yet and even some players taken in 2019 and 2018 may yet emerge as NHL players (so far I wouldn't count Robertson or Holmberg as NHL players - 87 and 91 games, respectively, don't really figure; same with Woll's 36 career games). But if you look at the Leafs' picks by decade in the top-3 rounds compared to the later rounds, there hasn't been much improvement:

2010 - 2019 Rounds 1-3: 35.3% are NHL players * 41.2% with Woll & Robertson
2010 - 2019 Rounds 4+: 6.7% are NHL players * 8.9% with Holmberg

2000 - 2009 Rounds 1-3: 40.7% were NHL players
2000 - 2009 Rounds 4+: 17.6% were NHL players

1990 - 1999 Rounds 1-3: 36.4% were NHL players
1990 - 1999 Rounds 4+: 15.2% were NHL players

I think one of the things that was said about Ferguson Jr. was that he was an excellent and intelligent scout - and his picks were not bad, but they were rarely high end enough given the poor calibre of the team because he kept trading valuable picks away in vain attempts to solve problems that just wouldn't fix the team.

This is a measure of drafting success, but not necessarily drafting _quality_, which is really the way to set yourself apart from your peers. As an example in the 2006 draft the Leafs landed 5 NHL calibre players, but none were elite (Tlusty, Kulemin, Reimer, Stahlberg amd Komarov).

Just going to add two additional thoughts:

- it's hard to evaluate the Leafs' scouting, when we have given away so many high picks over the years.

- Is the scouting bad or the player development bad? Probably a little from column A, a little from column B...
